Possibly the compressor is going out? If it's cold at night and when your driving it's because the heat is not sitting and soaking the compressor while your driving to keep it cool in the engine bay. Or get a Evap and recharge to see what happends, PM Frankie_P he is an A/C Specialist and will do it for $50. Which is really cheap!

when the ac cuts on and off during the day its usually an indication that you are low on freon, you need to have someone hook up gauges and check your psi, the ones at autozone kinda work but is not a good idea to do it yourself if you dont know what your doing, a/c difficult to work with and if you dont get it just right it will not work, even autozone could check your psi most times they will do it for free
