Yesterday while I was driving in first gear (got on vtec) the car made a pop (black smoke) and then the engine cut off. I just thought I loss power but the engine shuts off. I pulled it into a parking lot. I examined for obvious problems but didnt see any. So I tried to crank it. It turned over and made another pop again (the strange thing is I lost my turn signals). I looked for signs again and couldnt come up with anything. Now my turn signals work again I crank it again this time it didnt pop but it didnt start either. I checked for spark and I wasnt getting any. I checked the compression on the 1st cyclinder and its still at 230psi.
Is this a symptom of the igniter/distributor? Its the white plug b16a distributor which I hear craps out often. I pulled the cap off but I didnt see broken pieces which I saw last time on a different distributor. Would the car suddenly die like that from a distributor failure? Thanks for any help.

No codes. Ill change out the distributor since I have a spare one at home. Could there have been damage to the motor from what I described? Thanks.

Did it sound like an electrical pop or detonation?

The black smoke would signify a rich condition so I think youre on the right track. Id just troubleshoot the ignition system but if its not throwing codes its usually a rotor or ignitor problem. Since youve got a distributer handy just toss it on and be done with it. Please make sure you install the distributer with #1 cylinder at TDC.
