ECT sensor

Ok I have worked on two crxs in the last couple of weeks and they both seem to share the same problem. The first is my 88 crx with an ls/vtec with a b18a ls block with the coolant temperature sensor located by the oil filter (green with two nipples). The sensor was hooked up but the pr3 ecu was still throwing code 6 (ECT sensor). That car im not worried about but i just installed my friends ls/vtec into his 88 crx hf and its throwing the same code. This block is a b18b which the ECT is located on the thermostat housing. I used a plug for it and spliced in the two wires (black to black and green to green/yellow) and this car is throwing the code again.... is it just my luck stumbling into 2 cars with the same sensors being bad? I would think it would be less of a coincidence if they were the same year block but the sensors on the two different year ls blocks are in different locations. Has anyone had this problem? would anything else cause the ecu to throw this code?
Even on the 92+ blocks there is still a place tapped in for the ect sensor with the two nipples all you have to do is just remove the plug. The stock d-series ect sensor is the same as the older ls and b16a1. Ive always just run the ect sensors like this and did the same on my lsvtec(92 ls block). Im not sure but the ect sensor in the t-stat housing might operate at different voltage readings and they might be upsetting the pr3 ecu that was programmed with the green two nipple type sensor. Not saying thats deffinitely the answer but just what has worked on lsvtecs for me.
edit: the d-series ect sensor I was refering to was 88-91.

no they are different... i took the green one out of a b16 and it was covered in what looked like a mixture of oil and coolant... so it reads temerature from a liquid the sensor (in the exact location) on the 94+ block is a single plug with two wires that looks like a knock sensor that is just metal that screws into metal... im really perplexed with this whole fuckin thing.... WE NEED VTEC DAMNIT! thank you for the reply.

That sensor with the green plug is an ls only oil temp sensor which isnt necessary. That sensor goes into an oil passage. Under the water pipe look for a plug and unscrew it the ect sensor screws into that one which is a coolant passage.

would anyone know the ecu pinouts for this sensor?? is one ground and one run to the ecu or does the ecu read both wires?? i would like to rewire the bitch straight from the ecu and see if its a short in the wiring. i changed the sensors and they both threw the code... thanks.
