The best grounds go straight to battery.

What do you think about running a ground wire from a starter mounting bolt back to the battery, and a second wire from that starter bolt to the
shock tower?

Then any other items you want grounded can be run to that same shock tower bolt. Wire brush it super clean and grease it well to keep corrosion away.-Bob

My problem was a ground, I completely forgot the transmission ground from the chassis. custom240sx came over last night and once we put that ground back on...fired right up. We are gonna make a few more ground connection in the engine bay today...

You would think that the best ground is straight to the battery but it really isn't...in the car audio world it can create electrical noise or feedback through the amplifier if you run a ground all the way back to the battery (basically running a long ground). This tells me that it can actually cause feedback and electrical noise through the motor, this doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you think about it that means the electrical noise would be running back through your sensors and such to the ecu and can cause issues there too. I don't have a phd in electrical engineering but I would assume that this could be an issue. I mean think about it, even GM doesn't run a ground wire from the battery to the engine when they mount batteries under the seats of cars and dodge doesn't do it with their charger either. There must be a reason.

240, You have some good points and present them well instead of just criticisms..........I like your reasoning.

Engine performance is more important to me than audio quality, so I run
actual wires, and clean and grease the places they are bolted to, to insure good contacts. I will soon be running ground wires to the header bolts (next to the spark plugs) to insure the cleanest spark possible
across the spark plug electrodes.....and I run real wire for spark plug wire instead of other stuff. I have the battery close to the engine, over the front wheels for front end grip....when I drove rear drive cars, I put the battery in the trunk......

and I understand what you are talking about....there is induction current
around any wire, and it will affect audio.....using the chassis as ground doesn't require a shielded wire. a little like a radio antenna uses a shielded antenna wire to keep induction noise from being picked up on the radio.

2 reasons that MFG's would use no wire, when they can use the chassis to conduct current......
1. If the quality of the sound system is good, people's perception of the quality of the car is good. Other "quality perception" examples would be the use of rubber nards in critical chassis spots to dampen out vibration harmonics.

2. Economics.....When millions of cars are produced, any cost that can be saved per car is equal to millions in profit, and wire costs money ......other examples are where they use plastic snap-in screws to hold something instead of metal screws.-Bob

Everything worked out well. He corrected the length of my ground wire to the battery for one...it was a bit too long! We made made a new ground wire to the transmission to the chassis (4g) and another from the intake manifold to the chassis as well. I already had a nice one from the radiator support to the valve cover so we left that alone.

We were also able to reuse the custom battery bracket that I had up front. I will try to take some pics tomorrow if my camera is in a good mood! lol

Overall though, I am very happy with the outcome and I got to learn a few things which is always good. I got to hang out with a pretty cool guy who went ouf his way to give me a hand..2 times actually! He timed my car for me last summer when I purchased my new distributor as I did not own a timing light!

Awesome job bro It's too bad we met just before I move across state!

240 is a stand up guy!

Bob-thanks for your input as well! Anything from anyone is more than I know about electrical shit!

Steve
