ball joints going bad?

yes you will hear a noise but only if the ball joint is to the point where it is metal to metal contact and siezeing.
Easy way to check though is to look at the ball joint boot. If its cracked and dry (no lube) then chances are its FUBAR. To check further seperate the ball joint and check for fluidity of movement.

easiest way to check it..
1) disconnect negativebattery cable
2) jack up vehicle
3) grab wheel at top and bottom and try to move it. if it moves see where at. there will be very slight play even if its normal. but look at the joints and/or bearings

verticle play can be hub and/or ball joint and/or upper control arm bushing and/or lower control arm bushing related depending on the severity. horizontal play can be tie rods OR hubs. a bearing is round. if is has play up and down then it has play side to side.
