rear main seal installation

Hello
I replaced the rear main seal last night on a friends D16 engine. The FSM says that there needs to be 0.008 to 0.020 clearance on the rear side of the seal and the seal housing. It is a little hard to get the clearance set perfectly as I do not have a large seal driver to install it evenly. I had to tap it in on each side a little at a time.
Has anyone had any severe oil leakage problems by not following this factory spec?
Thanks

ditto. Just get it in there carefully and you are good.
