Hey
I blew my clutch and maybe a few syncros/gears...
So it looks like Im gonna be needing a new transmission.

My motor is a B16a1 and I was wondering which Honda transmissions are compatible with my motor. I was also wondering if anyone knows what transmission is currently on my motor or where I can find the tranny code.

Someone is selling a J1 tranny on ebay and says that it should work on a first generation B16. I just wanted to make sure.

Is there a certain tranny that would be better for me to get?

Thanks
Mike.

If your motor is a b16a1 then it has either a y1 or an S1/J1. If you tell me your speed in fifth gear at 4500rpms I could tell you which tranny you have.
Here are the trannys that will work:
y1 89-91 crx/civic sir tranny JDM only
S1/J1 9?-93 integra xsi tranny JDM only
ys1 92-93 usdm gsr tranny (good since it can be rebuilt)
90-93 usdm ls tranny (gear ratios are not good for N/A)

A J1 tranny would work well. It is geared very tight (same as usdm type r and pre 98 jdm type r) but it CANNOT be rebuilt using usdm parts.

...one more thing...KJ when you say the YS1 can be rebuilt while the others cannot do you mean replacing worn syncros and such? Im not exactly understanding what you mean by rebuilt maybe its because Ive never heard of someone getting their tranny rebuilt.

Thanks
Mike.

Yeah that is what I meant. Not too many people rebuild their Honda trannys because of how hard it is and there is a good availability of used trannys out there. But all these cable trannys are 8-12 years old and finding one that isnt already grinding is almost impossible. I cant remember the last time Ive driven/riden in a cable tranny hybrid that hasnt grinded at least third gear. So my advise is to try and find a tranny that can be rebuilt in the future.
