I swapped out the vss and my speedo doesnt bounce around any more but its not reading accuratly. It will say im doing 80 when i know im not going faster than 50. so could it still be a bad vss?

Dont worry.....tuner here. Well first lets start with basic electrical laws of conductivity. If it is not grounded you get an electrical spike that will not let the gauge operate at all. If it is the speed sensor when you start driving it will be fine until there is a significant electrical draw on the line(about 3000rpms)and will jump wildly around. As the other guy said his would be fine then later jump means he has a really good line run and it is just not overloading the tach. Tachometers are callibrated to be sensitive to draw as that is how they translate an electrical signal into rpms. You can do two things to fix this: 1. run the tach wire to the service connection on a 96-00(blue wire going to clip with cover on drivers side in engine bay near strut tower towards winshield)and connect rpm wire there(safest method)

2. run the wire to the negative side of the ignition coil(location varies among years call honda service dept and they will tell you just tell them you originally bought the car there and they will be more than happy to help or just get a chiltons manual.

That will solve your jumping tach prob you wouldnt beleive how many people have this problem.........there is your solution.

oh yeah i thought i should say.....bill is right about the vss though but it sounds as if you have a wiring prob do you have a compatible tach to the car you put it in. if it is calibrated at a different setting you would have a huge difference as well like trying to put a cluster from a 2000si in a 91dx ect.

Its not my tach thats jumping around Its my speedometer. When I replaced the vss my speedometer stopped jumping around and worked for a little bit but didnt read the mph accuratly but now it started jumping around again and not working at all. So now im really confused.

Did you buy a new one or just get one from a junk yard?
Do yourself a favor and bust out your multimeter. Backprobe the signal wire while spinning the wheel by hand. You should see a voltage change of 0 to .5V.
If thats fine youve got a wiring or ECU problem. Check the line for any voltage loss and if there is one trace it back.
This is a good time for you to have friends with the same car. Borrow a gauge cluster and and an ECU. Swap one at a time and see if theres any change.
By the way what have you done to your car? Any modifications?
