Default vtec won't engage

i swapped a 97 JDM ITR motor in my 94 GSR and everything was working fine and running smooth until my VTEC decided to stop working. i'm not throwing a CEL unless i'm in gear and let the motor rev down on its own. that's the only time it throws a CEL but other than that it drives and idles fine. the only mods are a test pipe and N1 exhaust. stock motor with the ECU it came with. my oil level and oil pressure is fine it's running at normal temps and i changed my oil about a month ago. autozone can't scan my ECU because their scanner is for vehicles from 95 and up and the chassis is a 94. i'm clueless as to what it could be.

No, it's an OBD1 vehicle, hence there won't be an OBD2 port to plug in the diagnostic tool.

If you're oil pressure is fine I'd look into checking your VTEC solenoid.

Vtec needs:

Coolant to be at normal operating temp
Oil pressure
VTEC and Pressure switch signal
Speed signal via VSS
RPM

I think he's mistaken, they can scan 96 and up, since that's when OBD2 was introduced.

Jump the service connector and check the code yourself. If you don't have a repair manual, get one, as you are going to need it if you are a car owner.
Once the code reveals the problem, fix it.

the vtec solenoid is fine. i checked it and it's working correctly and the screen isn't clogged. and yes i'm not throwing a code so i'm SOL for jumping the service connector, it wouldn't do me any good. the coolant is fine, the oil pressure and level is fine, and there aren't any problems with the ECU.

like civicized said, check the code yourself. the VTEC oil screen probably got clogged. clean it and go from there.

edit: my post came before reading the VTEC oil screen is clear. last thing i can think of is swap in a known working ECM. everything else seems to be working.
