remove cotter pin and remove castle nut from tie rod. reinstall the castle nut and make sure it grabbing a few threads. get a 4lb hammer and hit the castle nut from the bottom. should pop out after a couple light taps.

I prefer this method over a picklefork because it doesn't damage the boots on the tie rod ball joint.

Depending on the car, one way to avoid damaging the nut or threads is to just disconnect the upper control arms. On some of the older cars getting that ball joint to come loose is almost impossible without damaging something by hitting it repeatedly with a hammer.
