Default grinding Q's

Ok, So i hear a grinding sound, always when i go to reverse but not every single time i put it in reverse...

So here are my newbie Q's:

1 - Is "grinding" that is mentionned in the posts here refer to both reverse AND all the other gears or both, or either?

2 - So how long before i have to change clutch? And how much does it costs with installation labor? (i have N/A d15b7, 160,000 miles on it)

Thanks in advance for the input.

in reagaurd to the grinding.
if it is just a quick little grind, as you put it in reverse, thats normal, the only thing you can do about it is put it in another gear, then reverse. reverse doesn't have any synchros so you are forcing the gears together.
as for the clutch, if you are looking for performance, then you probably ought to change it now, but if all you want is for it to last, then don't worry about it until it starts slipping. My accord has the factory clutch with 180,000 miles on it. and it still holds strong. if I rev out and kick the clutch it slips, but thats to be expected.

ok, yeah, the reverse grind are usually small and quick, sometimes longer, but rarely happens... although i have never tried the "throw it in second first than reverse" option, I usually end up trying different things, which end up working, such as:
shifting gears (usually first) or
if the car is on an incline, move it a little,
or just punch gas when on neutral, then try putting it in reverse
or just try reverse again but slowly this time, listening to make sure the dreadful noise doesn't start (if it does, stop, wait a sec and try again)... until it works

... think that's about all i've tried...

its a horrible noise, but nothing to worry about. its normal. you don't hear the noise in any other gear, because there are syncros that force the gears to line up. Because you are supposed to be at a dead stop when you shift into reverse, there is no need for a syncro to force the gears together considering you can do it by hand. it also works as a safety thing, just in case you forget that you are driving a 5spd and not a 6 spd, you can't really get it into reverse, unless you really try.
thats why shifting into another gear first works, or moving the car a little works. the whole punching the gas, you're just getting lucky, same with the whole going slow thing. when you hit the gas, the car probably moves a little, remember, you only need an inch of movement. and when you try it slowly the second time, you've already lined the gears up the first time, so its got nothing to do with going slow.
its a normal noise, if the noise starts getting longer, then you might have an issue. otherwise, its not a big deal, just put it in a different gear first, then reverse, both with the car stopped.
