Ive had both.. i would much prefer the civic, you can feel the lightness of it, and ive had way more fun in it. With honda's and peoples budget, it comes down to weight... imo

My 1989 Hatchback has skunk 2's, kyb's, fstb, rstb,c pillar bar, with a b16a/cable b16 trans, I/H/E, STS, Hasport mounts, walbro 250, fuel rail, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and a Test Pipe. Swapped EF's go for around $3,000-$4,000 with identical setups. Thats cheap in my opinion! My car has done a best of 14.4@99mph on stock tires and can blast through the twisties like nobodys business!

+1 for civics!

1.) check out autox forum here on TR for a lot of info in the stickies

2.) Sports Car Club of America for general information and www.cfrsolo2.com for events

3.) i have been autox'ing my 91 Civic hatch for 3 years and i find it to be a fun car to autox. i have done suspension and brake upgrades

4.) smooth driving can beat out a car with power

5.) RedShift Motorsports - Your Honda/Acura Race and Performance Specialist

6.) when you find a car run it stock, learn it, and then modify as you see fit to stay in your class or move into another

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

did you seriously just ask why they have the classes ????
Let me brake this down for you...

AWD Class = All wheel drive vehicles hence AWD
FWD Class = Front wheel drive vehicles
RWD Class = Rear wheel drive vehicles

The reason why these classes are put into place is so that the vehicles of the same drive terrain can compeate together. Putting an AWD against FWD or RWD would be fucking stupid seeing that the car is going to handle much better than any of the other two. It makes the comp. more fair in between the rest of the classes within these groups.

As for your other question you are going to want something with little to no body roll and with great responsiveness. Your best bet for this would be to use the link stated above to do more research in to the field.

Some clubs classify cars, not always by drivetrain, but other stuff. ChiTown has good advice.

I would want to run a light, small car, and do suspension stuff first.
Make it stick to the road first, and you will beat more powerful cars.
After a person learns how to drive better, then you mod the car.-Bob
