Unless your boosting the setup, running the stock ls pistons would be a waste of your time as the compression would be in the 9.5:1 range.

For an all motor application you should install jdm itr or p30 pistons to put you in the high 11.8:1 range.

compression is in the 9.5:1 range with the stock ls head already.....remember the combustion chambers of the vtec heads are MUCH smaller than the ls one, so its going to give a bump in compression (hence the near 10.0:1 compression with the stock ls pistons). with a thinner head gasket and good bolt ons, 170 hp to the wheels is very reachable with a good tune....

c/r ends up being around 9.8:1 at the most with a gsr head with a stock ls bottom end and a 3 layer hg.

10:1 vs 11.5:1 on an all motor 81mm setup makes a nice amount of difference.

of course it does....but usdm gsrs are at 10:1 compression stock...and they can put down 170 to the wheels all day. theres no doubt higher compression makes for MUCH more power.
