and other than worn bushings that is the biggest cause of slop is the shift linkage. a mm of clearance at that point equals a few inches of play at the shifter.

Well I couldn't find any 8mm wide spring pins but i did find a 5/16 wide tension pin which looks to be the exact same thing as a spring pin and when 5/16ths is converted to millimeters to equals 7.9375mm so I think that will be close enough. We will soon see if it works!

Those pins are also called roll pins and are sold at Home Depot and Lowes, as well as NAPA. May be also in the "help" bubble pack section at Pep Boys.
Measure how long the pin has to be and grind it down; generally to the shaft diameter. It will tap upward into the shifter hole, and the clip sliding over it will keep it from coming loose.-Bob
