Is it possible this trans was modified for racing, the 5th gear removed and replaced with a handcuff type gadget?
Also, I would have someone shift the car into 5th while you are under it looking at the linkage and trans shift shaft movement to be sure it is pulling back, away from the trans toward the rear of the car. Be sure you see the trans shifter shaft move back and hear the trans clunking into gear.
