I cant get the brakes on my 89 civic hatchy Dx to work right. Ive tried bleeding them twice now. The pedal will be semi firm and the car will stop fine.

Let the car sit over night and the pedal will hit the floor and car will not stop for shit!! Even pulling the E-brake doesnt help mutch Barely works.

Just looking for some ideas where to look into fixing this!!!! Im not leaking any where i can see.

But somehow fluid is dissapearing when the car sits!


Any ideas????

That fluid has got to be going somewhere, *IF* it's truely
leaking down. It's possible, that it could be the bleeding technique.
Presuming the rear shoes are adjusted up properly...............
Pay attention to the order that you bleed the lines, and run a couple bottles through while you are bleeding them again.

To find a hidden leak:
Parking brake down, (it's really only for parking),
Pull the wheels, spray brake clean on every fitting at the wheels
and master cylinder, spray down the calipers/wheel cylinders,
and run a bottle or two of fluid through while you are bleeding
them again.

What made you start the fluid bleeding process in
the first place/what changed? New pads? New shoes?

Ok I bought this car cheap as a project. looks like the car has been sitting a long time.

It had a blown headgasket. so i fixed that started right up got to drive it and it wont stop for nothing!! pedal just hits the floor.

So i thought maybe it has air pockets in the lines.

But when i bled the brakes the brake fluid is mad Dirty full of particles. So im gonna bled them some more later today to find out whats going on.

Im just trying to see if anyone knows where for me to start. How do you adjust the back brakes???

Cause if i pull the Ebrake up and then try to stop the car stops ok..... not great but it trys.

is there a certain way I should bleed the brakes??????

 

One book I have says left front caliper, right front caliper.
right rear, left rear.

You don't have ABS or Anti-lock brakes, do you?-Bob

 

he shouldnt on that model, and thats the right pattern for bleeding. i have also seen (in more cases than not)come into the shop with the master cylinder leaking air through it.
just something to check. but like senor honda said clean everything first, bleed in order, then check for leaks.

you said fluid is disappearing? fluid level is dropping inside the brake master cylinder?

if you are not leaking brake fluid visually and bleeding the brake lines didnt help, then you probably have a bad brake master cylinder as fluid is leaking internally past the seals inside the brake MC.

 

Yeah the fluid level does drop when the car sits. Well I have a spare master cylinder so im gonna try that and then bleed the brakes and what not.
