If your speedometer stopped working your cable that runs from your odometer to the tranny snapped inside it's housing. Go here for all kinds of great help. Go to the EF section and do a search for VSS.

He has an EF chassis...His VSS is a mechanicle one because he has a cable tranny. The VSS has nothing to do with the engine and everything to do with your tranny. I'm an expert when it comes to the EF crap and I know the VSS system for the EF inside and out.

Your VSS is in the back of your odometer cluster. And gets is readings from your speeometer cable. If your sppedometer all of a sudden stopped working then usually your cable snapped which means your VSS is not recieving a signal which means you're getting a code 17. Also check and make sure your speedo cable is still secure inside the tranny and to the back of the odometer.
