i tryed jumping it an smoke started coming from the jump cables then we tryed push starting it and it didnt work i dont know what is wrong with it somebody help.............but if i turn the key like the door open lights an stuff will come on slowly. is it the battery or the alternator

 

first step:

is there standard voltage across the posts on the battery? (should be 11.8ish...)
