it's not rod knock. it was just build 3 months ago and hardly ever saw 7,000 rpm. it sounds like marbles in the engine untill it gets out of load. it the same symtom as when my friend andvanced his b20 too far and made the cel come on and sounded like pinging low in the rpm. keep the info coming. also, the motor has a 3 angle valve job.

Edit: just read that it is a low compression motor, I HIGHLY doubt it is pinging even with the timing you have it set at.

it doesn't do it at idle or free rev. and the gsr comp is 10.1:1 which these arias pistons are too. ok, so its not a knock, its a punch of ticks and pings at randon intervals under low rpm load. like i said, i'm not all "educated on these piston terms, since i never heard knock before since if you knock a rotary, you blow it. does anyone wanna make 50 bucks and come out to reset the timing?

Sounds like pinging i.e. pre-ignition/detonation.

Could be anything from a bad icm to a bad tune etc.

i just want everyone to know that i really appreciate you taking the time to respond to this thread. apon further reading into my honda engine builders handbook, it seems pinging is caused by pre-ignition/detonation, which is a result of lean a/f ratios and too far advanced timing for the load. a guy, S/N: YBlegal, said he might come out this week too and see whats up. thanks for the input again!! -nathan

well, i hope something didn't happen to YBLEGAL. we talked and set the time and he never showed and i can't get ahold of him. i hope all is well with him. i think i'm gonna set the engine to the timing mark on the cover, losen the aem tru time adjustment bolts and turn the engine backwards by hand untill the little marks line up with +2 degrees instead of +4. does that sound ok?

Set the cam gears to 0 and lock them down.
Then rotate the crank until the motor is at tdc (top dead center white mark).
Then look at your cam timing. Make sure the cams markings are lining up etc.

Honestly, I don't even think you should be running aem cam gears.
Aem cam gears suck (old 3 bolt style). They are also useless unless you have a turbo application or aftermarket cam application on a ls motor etc.
