Default Toda Questions

Didn't feel like reviving an old thread such as: https://www.tamparacing.com/forums/h...ht=toda+timing

But yes ... I did do some searching. I still need some clarifications from anyone out there running Spec B's.

I am having lots of trouble with the timing belt. From what I'm reading in previous threads, I'll need to upgrade to the TODA timing belt. I saw on their site it said to use their belt ... but figured it was marketing plow.

Here is the setup:

Toda Spec B cams
Toda valve springs
KMS titanium retainers
b16 head - ported/polish/3 angle valve job, milled 30/1000th's.

Here is the problem. When I put the belt over the gears and start to turn crank to get tension, the intake cam will start skipping teeth. It's almost as if the valve springs are so stiff that the cam does not move and I just end up pulling the belt over the top. Is this true? I cant imagine a brand new kevlar reinforced OEM replacement timing belt stretching but it almost seems as if that is the case. Can anyone shed some light on my dilemma? Thanks a lot.

sounds like you are not setting the belt correctly.

That's what I originally thought but changing a timing belt isn't rocket science. Myself and two other friends last night couldn't get this damn belt on.

did you install the cam with all the valve adjustment screws backed all the way out? You might have binded the cam while putting it in.

Yep

17mm bolt from Toda, but yes. I had to adjust the valve lash all the way up as I think it was hitting top of piston dome and holding cam in place. Once I did that, they can turn freely ... but stiff.

sounds great start her up....j/k

have someone turn the camshafts manually as u turn the crank, might be a pain in the ass but its worth a shot.

also before u start it, it wouldnt be a bad idea to disconnect fuel injectors and make sure it cranks ok before it starts up

Thanks. I'm glad you brought this up. We attempted this. Using 2 ratchets, we held the cams so they rotated in sync with crank. The belt would keep jumping before we could get tension.

If anyone can get this timing to work, I'll give ya $50.
