speedometer problem
just a few min ago i was on my way home from class and my speedometer started acting up. as i went from a stop it would jump rapidly up and down at random MPH's and then start acting normal after 50mph, 5 min later down the road it starts doing it there too, and then 2 min later it just drops to 0 no matter how fast im going, every once in a while ill be at about 50 and it will jump around again and go back to 0. i threw a CEL light but shut the car off and saterded it and drove it and the CEL was gone but still had the problem. any one help?

2 things to check
1.check the speedo cable and the vss for any mechnical problems cable not in all the way vss missing. it mechanical so no electrical checks. if everything is good then go on to number 2
2. the speed pulser you check that by taking out the gauge cluster and sticking a pencil in the back of the speedometer cable connecter socket and then turn the pencil while checking resistance on the two terminals below it (they look like screws) there will be resistance at 4 points while turning the pencil 360 degrees. if there is no resistance you will need a cluster.

ya it sounds like the Vehicle speed sensor... mine had a VERY bad connection till it finally went bad and completely read random MPH's till it went bad... not hard to change~ should be on top of the tranny somewhere and for my 97 civic it was like 100-120...
well i do not have a vehicle speed sensor, according to my wiring diagram and to my car, its a base model RS, which means no ABS, and on the diagram the imputs from the VSS's all go straight to the ABS control module. im just having trouble trying to locate the spedo cable.
ok, ran into a slight lil problem, i figured i would see what experiences had to bring to the table befor i broke somethin, the dash that you have to remove to get to the cluster.now i got the left side off no problem, 4 screws and a lil prying,
but the side that the a/c switches are and midlle is a doffrent story, i cant get around or behind to see if anything is holding it in, and if i lift the side i got off it will brake the pice in 1/2, and prying does no good because its the border of the ac switches and is vety thin and frail.
any suggestions?
