Default running rough

I put a DOHC ZC in my CRX, It starts, but runs rought. I have several issues with timing.
1. AEM cam gears alignment marks are way off being accurate, I tried to line them up but once lined up, valves were opened, so I set them up by just looking at the camshaft lobes
2. I don't have a timing belt cover, so to set the bottom end at TDC, I inserted an 3/8 extension through the sparkplug hole, and tried to feel when the piston was at TDC
3. code 9, cyl sensor

I think that all of these things are related to the running rought issue, so:
how can I check if the timing is right?

BTW, I'm not ghetto for setting up the timing like that, I'm something like McGyver, lol.

not sure what you mean by about your valves being open but that is a good way to set tdc that is how i do,but i would never use a metal object i use a long plastic stright tube makes it so easy, but i would say your problem is in your timing if you said you do it yourself and it not running right you should take it somewhere fast befor more problems come up

I got it running better by adjusting the timing with the AEM cam gears. Do you know if there's a way to check if the timing is right?, or should I just keep guessing the correct timing?.

It's not running rough anymore. I messed around with the cam gears and got the timing right. I guess the only way to know that the valve timing is right is when the car doesn't run rought anymore. I also found out that AEM makes adjustable cam gears because they can't set the timing marks right. This is some good info on cam gears, it sucks that only one TR member read this thread.

Fifth motor in my crx, there's no way I'm going to take it over 4K RPMs, I'm gonna chip my ECU so the rev limiter keeps the car under 4K lol. I'm gonna have it tuned right tomorrow by a honda tech I know.
