Buy something called "Aircraft Remover" this wont remove aircrafts but it will strip your rims in about 5 minutes or less.

This stuff works on anything......even the enemies car

+1 i tried it on doug's extra valve cover, didn't work all that well. But apparently it worked wonders on the first one.

If it does damage the clear coat on the rims, (which it will but, I doubt the rims had clear coat left on them anyways) then you might want to purchase a die grinder (assuming you have an air compressor) and get some polishing wheels and polishing clay bars. Its a big process but you can make them so polished they will look chrome, the down side is cleaning them everytime which = bitch. Alternatives are clear powder coating them which dulls the shine. Or spraying on a 3-6 month protective film and then cleaning and reapplying every 3-6 months. The first alternative is, in my optinion, the better choice. I don't currently have access to the websites that show you the process, and I will forget about this thread all together shortly, but if you google it I promise you will find them.

There is also another way... a pain full death would be more enjoyable though. You could do it by hand, this would seriously take you 8 hours a wheel to do correctly, where as the die grinder would cut your time down to 3 hours per wheel.

What you would do is to make sure that you remove everything from the surface, only have open metal. The aircraft remover works well. Then you want to take 800 grit sand paper and sand the entire rims. Once finished clean rim throughly and upgrade to 1000-1200 grit sand paper, this time use use water and wetsand the entire rim, clean once again and use 2000 grit sand paper, again wetsanding to a very very smooth finish. (1000-2000 = specialty paper which is rather difficult to find, I did this 3 years ago and I can't remember where I found the paper but it was a hobby shop on waters I think, call around and ask different hobby shops.) After you clean off the rim for the last time it's time to bring out with the polish, polish this thing to hell and back, your arm may die and need to be brought back to life several times. If you spent the time and did this correctly you will have a freaking awesome looking rim, now take it to be clear powder coated or buy clear coat paint and put it on very carefully, but I wouldn't recomend that part since it doesn't last as long. The protective stuff is also an option. They make some good polish that sells on ebay, it's normally expensive but it makes your final job much easier, or you can just keep going over your work till it's perfect. Anyway the end result is sexy since paint isn't.
