hmm i was under the impression that you had to get new gears all you need are syncro rings?

EDIT: when i changed the fluid i found no metal shavings at all. if that means that gears are still good then w00t for me!

Thanks Bert-O.

Lead, while you can get just the synchro rings themselves, make sure that the teeth on the synchro sleeve set gears are not damaged or worn.
I am rebuilding an ITR tranny right now, and while I can probably get away with replacing just the rings, I realize that with the wear I see on the sleeve sets, I might as well replace everything.

1-2 sleeve set
3-4 sleeve set
5-R sleeve set
All 3 shift forks

Bert-O, I'm gonna need some prices

Follow the link. #7 and #8 are Sleeve Sets. Within each sleeve set you will find individual brass synchro rings, which you cannot buy from Honda by themselves. (as far as I know) At each end of #8 combo, those are the brass synchro rings.

I will get some pics ups when I get home this morning. I have everything apart right now.

This is a synchro ring:

This is a synchro set; the small black toothed ring with teeth facing down is the top and the small black toothed ring with teeth facing up is the bottom. Kind of like how the teeth are arranged in an animal. The synchro set lies between the gears on the extreme top and bottom of the picture.

NO

Also, there's a big fat huge magnet inside the tranny, 99% of all the shaving stays there.

Either or it won't take long.

I love it when I get a tranny to rebuild and customer states "yeah, it started grinding like a year ago, now it won't go into gear".........."well son, it gonna cost you like $800 in parts (discount like 40% off from the dealer) plus labor.

Trannies are front brake pads,,,,,,well sorta off, ignore it and it will catch up to you.

Also, make sure if you are going to buy a GSR tranny. The ones I've seen here have always ended up being LS trannies. Make sure you trust the guy.

PM me so I won't forget. On H-T, one of the web-banners sells just the rings itself.

But, if the gear is worn due to the synchro ring was worn first, it is highly recommand to replace the set. Also, follow exaxtly what the helms states. Measure the linkage system inside the tranny. I've recently found out that if its out of spec, it will lead to synchro wear faster. Alot of guys missed this.

Also, another tip, inspect the shift linkage very closely. If the welds seems to be cracking, replace it. Shift linkage is key factor to the whole tranny setup. I had a ITR setup with 50k miles on it, well, after a shifting fast, the linkage started to bent thus making the tranny shift faster than the tranny could.

What does a rebuild usually run?
Same problems as the rest just started grinding into 3rd.
