Question: Explain how compression is lost and how a cylinder goes completely dead.

*no this did not happen to either of my engines; i am just wanting to learn more*

thanx. angela

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

If your HG is blown your cylinder isn't airtight, it's like blowing air into your hand, it leaks through the cracks. Pretty much the same if your rings get bad enough.

You guys forgot to mention that loss of compression can be created by bent valves & valve seals etc..

Also breaking in a motor incorrectly will cause this.Low boost means low boost!

Huh ?

You are trying to say, not letting rings seat will cause shitty compression numbers because the rings never seated properly etc.

Where is a place to get a compression test done????? Also how can you easily find out if your car is not up to par by your standards........would a quick tune from secret sevices benefit this prob?? Or would a very educated mechanic???

Compression test is easy. Pick up a compression tester from Sears or some auto store. Very self explanitory. Bad compression usually can only be fixed through mechanical means like re-ringing a bottom end or reseating straight vlaves on a head. Too tight of a valve adjustment can cause a loss of compression too. A motor with really big cams causes alot of overlap and a loss of dynamic compression when when compression tested. This is th reason motors with big cams like a high static compression ratio......blah blah blah

A Good way to check this is by putting oil in the cylinder above the piston, then try a compression test. if you get the same compression you had before then you can bet its the rings or the valves.its the rings if the oil leaks through and goes right to the oil pan. If its still there then its your valves.
