Default 89 Civic tranny not same as 88 tranny

Hi,

I used to have a 88 4 speed tranny that I took and today I put in a 89 5 speed tranny.
I got everything in and when I went to put the axles into the new 89 tranny they did not go all the way in.
I think the splines are different, i just found that out now.
That 88 has a different number of splines then 89-91 trannys.

So anyways, I think im goin to have to replace both axles and also both spindles.

I really dont have the money to do that or the time. I spent enough time gettin this thing in.

Anyways, someone told me I could take the "tulips" out of the old 4 speed tranny and put it in my new 89 tranny. I guess the "tulips" are where the axles go in. He said you can just pry them out with a flathead screwdriver and put them in place of the 5 speed ones. He said then the axles should go in with no problem.

He says he has it done on his civic. He used to have a 88 4 speed but he put a 90 5 speed in. He said he just popped them out and it worked perfectly. No need to change axles or spindles.

My question is has anyone ever done this? And where abouts do you pry them out?

Thanks

wait, someone who really knows 4th gen civics told me all inner splines are the same throughout all the years and the outter splines are the ones different.
he said it should just pop in.
Now that i think of it i probably didnt align the axles right because i was in a hurry. Ill give it a try tommorow.

oh yeah, today i got both of the axles in.
I had to kinda tap them a little bit with a hammer while having a friend hold them straight. They popped right in with no problem.
