check the timing belt/cams. i just got my valves adjusted and my cams are making noise cause of the belt skipping a tooth, due to the belt tensioner

was there any valvetrain mods added lately? Stiffer springs/beefier cams can make the valvetrain noise increase.... if not, then bring it to a shop where someone else can hear the noise.

If it is a b16a1 then the lma's are probably your problem. You want to change them out anyways if you are running a bigger than stock camshaft, even type R. The contact patch on the 1st gen lma is way smaller than the newer gsr/b16a/itr and the rocker arm will actually ride off of the lma and it could bind up and cause bad cam wear or breakage.

You are right about the test though. Ease into vtec and if the tapping goes away then the lma's are the culprit.

FYI the newer b16a (at least 99-00) and the newer lma's off the gsr are the same as the itr ones even though the part number is different. They were tested for compression travel and spring tension. Also the 00 prelude spring type lma's can be used in a b-series head with a .040" shim. New b-series lma's are about $30 each (about $240 for a set) and the prelude ones are only $8 each.
