my one question would be that would the LMA's if they are bad just make noise at 3k and not anywhere else across the rpm range?

They are loud from idle till vtec. Once vtec hits you won't here them. The way I test for them is to ease into vtec real light in third gear or so and if it clears out when vtec kicks them the lma's are your culprit. I too think your problem is exhaust related though.
