National speed limit to conserve gas???
A national speed limit reduction would eventually raise the price of crude. We're not the only nation on Earth, after all. Demand destruction here leaves more crude on the market, at a lower price, for developing nations to consume at a faster rate than we do.
It's in our best interest as a nation to waste as much fuel as possible. Patriots would push for a repeal of speed limits.

That's right, bitches, TWO quotes!

So yeah, if everyone drove 55 we could cut our reliance on oil by about 15-20%.

That wouldn't do SHIT. Dropping the speed limit 21% will only extend driving times by 21% and extend the car's run time by 21%. Mathematically...it won't save much gas. But it will cost BILLIONS in time wasted. A better plan would be to shrink America by 21 percent. Everything's closer, less gas!
Sweet idea on the fat people laws. Every time I see an obese person in one of those damned motorized chairs, I want to throw them out of it.

Heres an idea. Public transportation! Our public transit system is effing terrible. Why not follow the examples of european countries, where most people don't need their cars for going to work or going shopping.

Air pressure increases greatly over about 50 MPH and so the energy needed to increase your speed (or maintain your speed) gets more and more the faster you go. In fact it takes 2.4 times the energy to go 80 MPH as it does 60 MPH in most cars.. obviously the shape of the car matters a lot... and the gearing.
Its not just about MPG either, wear and tear on cars is less and importantly, pollution and emissions is less too. If all cars cruised at 55 MPH instead of 70-90 then not only would we save money on gas, we'd save on car repairs over the life of the car and reduce the pullution put out by cars by 15% at least.
