ls1-what's the big deal?
let me start by saying that this isn't a diss or anything like that. i have a real question that i want answered. having said that, what's so good about ls1s? why are they so cool? do they have some kind of special dealie that i don't know about? are they super technologically advanced? what? also, what kind of power do they make stock, and what times do they run? thanks for any help ya'll can give.
for one they under rate the motors which is bad ass. Most put down 300whp where they are rated at 305hp to the flywheel stock. They respond amazing to mods, and they are FUCKING FAST AS HELL!!!!

The real scoop on the LS1 is this: They come from the factory with lots of HP, respond VERY well to mods, and you can go very very fast while retaining a very streetable car. The last one is probably the most significant. If your really wanted to make a fast track car...buy a BB chevy, Mopar, or make up a mustang track car. But it wont be the type of car you can drive to New Orleans on the weekend and still get 25 mpg. My car is capable of deep 10s and would have no problem driving long distance and get good gas milage. I drove to Orlando for SLP day last month. I have driven it to work everyday this week and will all next week too. Gets about 16 mpg around town and 24+ highway.
In short...it allows you avg joe to buy a car off the lot, mod it, be fast, and still drive everyday to a higher degree than anything prior.

One thing that is super special about the LS1 is that it uses the same type of head setup as the SB2 Chevrolet race motor. The port design is such that the after market can't improve on it. All the heads\Cam cars are aftermarket cam with ported stock heads. The heads stock flow better than most after market heads for the traditional SBC motor. In fact there are several cars out there with a cam swap and bolt ons putting down nearly 400 hp to the wheels and runing 11.9 to 11.6 or so with the stock heads still.

just as an after thought, My car with the weakest LS1 offered in an Fbody(98 was the first year and the power levels have come up each year since) thi first time I dynoed it it put down 298HP to the rear tires and ran 13.3 with a stock exhaust and free mods.

cam + boltons and has run 11.9s on not so hard of a hook at 3600 lbs and big mph in DA=+2000 feet. also very very streetable. it is made in the heads. most of your aftermarket SBC heads and Ford heads flow about as well as stock ls1 heads. also the intake doenst become a restriction untill about 470 rwhp but still works well.
i mean how many other motors gain easily 70 rwhp with boltons and a pure streetable cam?
