Default LS1 Z28 Speed Limiter???

I just bought a '99 Z28 6-spd. and was rolling through the gears and it seems to hit a speed limiter at about 115-118mph no matter what gear (4th, 5th, or 6th). The car's got the 155mph speedo so I thought it would only have a 160mph limiter. Can anyone help me out with this?

Yes, its limited by the factory installed tires. It probably had the cheap Goodyear RSAs on it. Itll easily do over 155

That's where I'm confused. I did some research and everything I saw said if it came with Z-rated tires, it would come with the 155mph speedo and a 160mph limiter, but if it came with the crappers, then I would have a 115mph speedo and the limiter that I have. God I'm pissed. haha

check the RPO codes, look up all the ones that begin with Q. they will tell you what tire was originally equipped on the car. and look up U aswell, that will be the instrument cluster.

if an fbody did not come from the factory with z rated tires it will have a speed limiter around 115-120ish

i sooo want to be a total asshole right now...but for some reason im in a happy mood.

the RSA tires were only rated for like 125mph...therefor by govt. regulations, the manufacturer cannot allow the car to exceed the rating of the tire.

Sometimes its tempting

Yes, its limited by the factory, not the car. Raise the limiter and itll do 160 all day. If you do 160 on a tire only rated for 120, then guess what... boom... all bad news from there.

All V8s got the same speedo clusters. I think the different speedo clusters stopped in 92 when they stopped the different engine options (the 350s got the 150 and the 305s got the 115 speedos)
