If you removed the cats you likely did go rich just a bit. But as Gator said that has nothing to do with the popping...thats an LS1 thing.
I would port the MAF ends. Do not buy an 85mm MAF. I used to run ported ends. Actually...if you want some ported ends I have a set of black ones here ill sell for $40.
Anyways...you can do a half assed port job on your stock MAF housing and have it work out ok. The only thing is it may make you run leaner...as in..too lean. No way of knowing until you put it on the dyno with wideband.
You are searching for small amounts of HP with the mods you are doing. Its very likely you could actually loose more HP due to having a small affect on AF ratio by making thses changes. The only way to see actual gains from the small stuff you are doing is to be certain your AF ratio remains optimal. In otherwords...if you hope to gain 8 hp my reoving cats....you may break even or actually lose HP because you likely made the car run richer. And you will not see that 8 HP until the AF is brough back to the correct level through tuning. Its a crap shoot to that degree with this GM car because the MAF is so sensative. If you are not monitoring your changes...this stuff may net you a big fat 0. Or...you could get lucky and see 10 hp...only one way to find out.
In the end if everything is off...youll just have to spring for tuning by a pro like Mr Formato to align things back to where they should be.
sucks modding on a budget...I know.
