Hall of Fame ceremony closes '19 SCCA National Convention

39 sharessharetweetemail
By: SCCA 23 hours ago Seven individuals who made significant contributions to the Sports Car Club of America and the world of motorsports became official members of the SCCA Hall of Fame Saturday evening during the Awards Banquet that closed out the 2019 SCCA National Convention at South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. David Ammen, Dr. Frank Falkner, George Follmer, Patricia “Patc” Henry, John McGill, Dorsey Schroeder and Henryk Szamota make up the 2019 Hall of Fame class.

David Ammen
An SCCA member for more than 60 years, Ammen spent nearly half that time as a competitor who made 20 consecutive National Championship appearances through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. An accomplished driver, the New England Region member is also well known for his hard work behind the scenes. He was a Road Racing Steward until the 2000s, participated on the Competition Committee, served consecutive years on the Board of Directors, and is a Woolf Barnato Award winner.

Dr. Frank Falkner
Born in England, Dr. Falkner moved to the United States in 1956 and soon joined the SCCA where he became a Regional Executive and helped host an SCCA National Convention. In 1960, Dr. Falkner became a member of the newly formed SCCA Competition Events Committee, and served as the Committee’s Chairman one year later. It was during his tenure that the Club introduced the Stewards program. Also during the ’60s, Dr. Falkner was elected to the SCCA Board of Governors, became Vice Chairman in 1965, and Chairman of the Board a year later. Under his leadership, the Club evolved from an amateur-only racing organization to a Club that supported and ran professional events, including the Formula One races on U.S. soil. After retiring from the Board of Governors, he became a member of SCCA’s Professional Competition Board and was a Woolf Barnato Award winner.

George Follmer
Follmer started racing in 1959 and was immediately successful. Over the following two decades, he competed in virtually every form of racing, including the United States Road Racing Championship, USAC, NASCAR, IROC, Fast Masters, SCCA’s RaceTruck Challenge, Formula 5000, Formula One, the World Endurance Championship, IMSA, and both SCCA Trans Am and Can-Am. In 1972, he earned the unique honor of winning the Trans Am and Can-Am championships in the same year — the only driver ever to have done so. In 1999, Follmer was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Patricia “Patc” Henry
Henry has been a member of SCCA for 54 years. During the first 18 years of her membership, she was a vital member of the Nebraska Region, filling many positions and winning many awards. And while her string of accomplishments in the early days left a strong impression on the SCCA locally, it is her work both in SCCA Road Racing and SCCA Pro Racing for which she became nationally and internationally known. During her ten years at SCCA Pro Racing, her detailed and dedicated work made her a fixture on the professional sports car racing scene in the United States. Henry later moved to the SCCA Road Racing department and became known for her extraordinary work in managing all of SCCA’s Road Racing activities. In that role, her experience guided a booming racing program and its crown jewel – the National Championship Runoffs®

.John McGill
McGill was a longtime member of SCCA and a Regional Executive of the Mahoning Valley Region. But what he’s perhaps best remembered for is his untiring work as track manager of Nelson Ledges Road Course in Northeast Ohio. During his tenure at the track, McGill helped bring about use of “tire walls” to improve safety. Because of his dedication, SCCA created the John McGill Award in 1975 that honors those that make a significant contribution to the Road Racing program, and McGill was the first person to receive that award.

Dorsey Schroeder
One of the youngest drivers to earn an SCCA competition license more than 45 years ago, Schroeder went on to become an accomplished competitor in SCCA Road Racing, SCCA Pro Racing, IMSA, IROC, Grand Am, ARCA and NASCAR. He has been a broadcast television race commentator for many years and continues to serve the motorsport community today as Race Director of SCCA’s Trans Am presented by Pirelli. Additionally, Schroeder is Competition Director for the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) series, and formerly worked as Race Director for Pirelli World Challenge.

Henryk Szamota
A member of SCCA’s New York Region since 1950, Szamota was an active and dedicated SCCA competitor, supporter and patron. His commitment progressed through Region involvement that included Race Chairman, Assistant Regional Executive and many years as Regional Executive. Beyond his own region, Henryk is credited with founding the North Atlantic Road Racing Championship (NARRC), collectively run by the New York, North Jersey, Mohawk-Hudson and New England Regions for many years. In 1961, Szamota was elected to the National Board of Governors. There he served for 14 years, but then decided fresh leadership was instrumental for the Club and helped create the two-term Board of Directors limit that stands today. For his work and dedication to the Club, Szamota received in 1977 the Woolf Barnato Award.Below are some additional honor recipients from Saturday’s ceremony:

Woolf Barnato Award: Karen Babb, Northwest Region
This is SCCA’s highest award and is presented to a member who has made an outstanding, long-term contribution to the Club.

David Morrell Memorial Award: Laurie Shepherd, Oregon Region
This award is presented to encourage continued participation in the Steward’s Program by recognition of an active National Chief Steward who has exhibited outstanding performance and dedication to the sport and the highest principles. The winner is selected by the Chairman of the Stewards and the Executive Stewards.

President’s Cup: Michael Varacins, Chicago Region
Presented to the driver demonstrating ability, competitiveness and success at the National Championship Runoffs. The winner is selected by the Stewards of the Meeting and the Chief Steward of the National Championship Runoffs along with the President and CEO of SCCA. The inaugural presentation in 1954 was performed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

By: SCCA | January 10, 2019 10:05 AM SCCA Ventures Inc, has named Sydney Davis Yagel as General Manager of SCCA Pro Racing. After joining SCCA Pro Racing last spring, Yagel quickly fit into her role as the Senior Manager of Race Operations, where she showcased her leadership capabilities. Not only is Yagel the first female to lead SCCA Pro Racing, she is also the youngest General Manager in SCCA Pro history.“We are pleased that Sydney has accepted the position of General Manager for SCCA Pro Racing Division located in Indianapolis,” said SCCA Ventures President Dan Helman. “Sydney’s varied background and passion will be a big asset in leading our SCCA Pro Racing Team.”Prior to joining SCCA Pro, Yagel spent 10 years managing MSR Houston events and schools. During her tenure at MSR Houston, she also held positions as the Circuit of the Americas Motorsports Operations Marshal Coordinator and as the Houston and Louisiana Grand Prix Race Chair.

"I didn't get here because of some damn liberal women's equality hogwash. I worked my butt off."

“I am very much looking forward to stepping in to this new position with SCCA Pro Racing,” said Yagel. “The 2019 season is shaping up to a fantastic one for all of our series and sanctioning partners. Our staff, the SCCA Ventures board, our partners and I all have goals to achieve this year, and I can’t wait to start marking them off our lists.”Yagel, a 27-year member of the SCCA, embraced her role by extending her expertise to serve as the Houston Region Race Chair for 10 years. She then moved on to serve as its Regional Executive. Her volunteerism within the SCCA did not go unnoticed as she was awarded Worker of the Year in 2014 for her efforts in race administration and the SCCA Member of Excellence in 2016.

Rahal wins 2019 Phil Hill Award

sharetweetemail
By: RACER Staff | January 30, 2019 6:55 AM The Road Racing Drivers Club honored one of its own prior to the Rolex 24 At Daytona, presenting RRDC president Bobby Rahal with the 2019 Phil Hill Award. The 2018 award recipient, David Hobbs, made the presentation at the annual RRDC members’ dinner on January 23.The Phil Hill Award has been presented annually since 1993 to the person who the RRDC feels has rendered outstanding service to road racing. The recipient may be a driver, entrant or outstanding member of a sanctioning body. Named in honor of America’s first Formula 1 World Champion (in 1961), the award is not only a tribute to Hill’s accomplishments on the track, but also recognizes his contributions as an ambassador for the sport. Hill passed away in 2008.On winning the award, Rahal said, “It means everything to me. Phil Hill was such an amazing guy, not just as a driver and as an ambassador, but a driver who has won in multiple disciplines. He was a very educated guy who had a lot to say and had a lot to do with things in the automotive world. This award named after him has got to be one of my favorite trophies.”Robert “Bobby” Woodward Rahal was born in Medina, Ohio, in 1953, and started in SCCA’s Formula Atlantic Series and then European Formula Two. In an 18-year career spanning F1, Can-Am, Le Mans/IMSA, and CART, Rahal notched three CART championships, including the 1986 Indy 500 win, and wins at the 1981 24 Hours of Daytona and the 1987 12 Hours of Sebring.Hobbs, last year’s award winner, “interrogated” Rahal, helping him recall important moments in his racing career. “Winning the Indy 500 changed my life personally and professionally,” said Rahal. “I don’t know of any other sporting events out there in the world that do that. Maybe the British Open in golf or Wimbledon or the U.S. Open in tennis.“When I won Indy the one thing that was super special to me was winning it for my team owner Jim Trueman, who passed away 10 days after we won Indy. He was the guy who really gave me my chance. He was with me year after year in some way, shape or form. To win the race and achieve something that he wanted so much really meant a lot to the team and me. We never really got to celebrate the win, but it has a lot of meaning for all of us who were involved with our team at that time.”In open-wheel racing, Rahal started 264 races for five teams and scored 18 poles and 24 wins. He collected back-to-back CART championships in 1986 and ’87, and picked up his third in 1992. When Buddy Rice won the 2004 Indy 500, Rahal became only one of a handful of individuals to win the Indy 500 as both a driver and a team owner. After retiring from driving in 1998, he joined Jaguar’s F1 effort and later became the interim boss of CART.Along with David Letterman and businessman Michael Lanigan, he is a principal in Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and has developed some of the top young talent in open-wheel racing, including Graham Rahal, Takuma Sato, Buddy Rice, Danica Patrick, and many others. He also brought Honda into North American open-wheel racing in the early ’90s, that has produced for Honda 16 driver crowns and more than 237 victories including 12 Indy 500 wins. His team won the 2010 GT team and manufacturers titles in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) with BMW and swept the top two spots in the 2011 12 Hours of Sebring, earning the 2011 ALMS GT drivers championships for Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller. In 2012, the team earned back-to-back Sebring wins and was second in the Team Championship and third in the Manufacturer Championship. In 2013 BMW Team RLL earned two wins, seven podium finishes and four poles en route to second place in the Driver, Team and Manufacturer Championships. In 2014, the team joined the United Sports Car Series (USCC), later renamed the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Since 2014, BMW Team RLL has totaled 17 wins, 23 poles and 68 podiums and second place in the Manufacturer, Team and Driver championships in 2015 and 2017.In 2018, the team brought BMW its first victory with the all-new M8 GTE and followed up with back-to-back wins, six podiums and three poles over the two-car program. in 2018, the team also entered the world’s first production-based electric vehicle race series — the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY — with a two-car effort.Rahal was the driving force behind the new HMP Legends of Motorsports historic racing series that was purchased by an outside group late in 2011. Along with his leadership of Team RLL Racing, he operates Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, a string of car dealerships in Pennsylvania, is former Chairman of the International Motor Racing Research Center Governing Council at Watkins Glen and is active in the community through the Bobby Rahal Foundation. He is past Chairman of the USA Bobsled & Skeleton Foundation.

Foyt received another honor and a surprise Thursday night. He was inducted into the Houston Sports Hall of Fame — and then found out he wasn’t the oldest person being honored. The 84-year-old racing legend joined Houston Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini, who led the “Luv Ya Blue” Oilers to two consecutive AFC titles; Olympic gold medalist and two-time world heavyweight champion George Foreman; and 95-year-old Hall of Famer golfer Jackie Burke Jr., who won the Masters and the PGA Championship in the same year (1956), in Houston’s Sports Walk of Fame.

“I was born and raised in Houston and I’ve never left. I don’t care how many times you’ve been honored, it is really special to be honored in your hometown,” said Foyt, who was the Indianapolis 500’s first four-time winner and still holds the record for the most IndyCar wins (67) in a career that spanned five decades.“And I’m glad to know I’m not the oldest one here!”Super Tex came barreling out of Houston in the late ‘50s and immediately caught the attention of car owners with his aggressive style and speed. He debuted at Indy at age 23 in 1958 and pulled into Victory Lane for the first time three years later. He scored wins in 1964, 1967 and 1977 – starting in front-engine roadsters and finishing his career in 235 mph ground-effects cars. He also captured the USAC national championship seven times in addition to winning the Daytona 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Default Concours in the Hills Raises $155K With Record 941 Entries Fountain Hills, AZ

Concours in the Hills Raises $155K With Record 941 Entries

Fountain Hills, AZ — What started out six years ago as a low-key, stress-free car show for under 200 vintage and classic cars, the Concours in the Hills has now mushroomed into a gargantuan 941-car extravaganza that’s close to capacity on its picturesque site, but still maintains its no-stress atmosphere as a free celebration of classic, vintage, sports and exotic cars from around the globe.

This year’s Feb. 9 event shattered previous levels for charity donation, attendance, show vehicles and sponsorship. Other than Scottsdale’s January auction week, it’s likely Arizona’s largest gathering of vintage cars each year. Event organizer Scuderia Southwest reported it raised more than $155,000 from the $60 per-car entry fee, 108 sponsors and vendors and donations, all benefiting Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Photo: Scott Colbath Scuderia Southwest

The over 20,000 estimated attendees gawked from morning to mid-afternoon at literally every make and model of performance and road automobiles, from Aston Martin to Zagato, BMW to Yugo. The bulk of the show entrants were a wide range of classic and modern American muscle cars like Shelby Mustangs and Cobras, Corvettes, Camaros and Mopar, to vintage European sports cars from Ferrari, Maserati Porsche, Austin-Healey, etc.

For the VM-oriented crowd, there was a display of 21 race cars, including a mid-1960s Indy car driven by Mario Andretti, a 1958 Lister Jaguar “Knobbly,” a couple of Mirage Le Mans racers mixed with a Bocar, Kurtis 500S, Devin D, Shelby GT350 and a 1957 Jaguar D-Type racer that won the Best of Show award for owner Terry Larson.

Other award winners were Best Car Club Display: Jaguar Club of Central AZ; Best Import: 1970 Maserati Ghibli, Albee Allstadt; Best Domestic to Mike Shoen’s 1968 Lonestar Cobra, one of one built by Shelby American, an extremely rare car and a real stunner, a low-slung red coupe powered by a mid-engine Ford V8, naturally.

Also on the racing theme, the show was opened by Arizona-resident race drivers Lyn St. James, Arie Luyendyk, Didier Theys, Harley Cluxton and racer and ex-“Bachelor” Arie Luyendyk Jr. Five helicopters were also on display on the far side of the lakeside setting, including two U.S. Marine Corps attack copters that panicked the local waterfowl as they made low passes at the end of the show.

Next year’s concours is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8.

International racing stars, captains of the motorsports industry, local dignitaries and race fans gathered on Thursday to honor former race-car driver and current multi-team owner Bobby Rahal at the Corning Museum of Glass. Rahal received the Cameron R. Argetsinger Award for Outstanding Contributions to Motorsports.

Rahal, who fields race teams in IndyCar, IMSA and Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY Series, was honored by the International Motor Racing Research Center for his outstanding commitment to the sport of auto racing. This was the sixth year the glass trophy has been presented. Previous honorees were Chip Ganassi, Richard Petty, Roger Penske, Mario Andretti, and Jim France and the France Family.

The award was presented to Rahal, who served on the board of the IMRRC from 2015-2018, by J.C. Argetsinger, former president of the IMRRC, and one of nine children of the late Cameron and Jean Argetsinger.

“About a decade ago we were so fortunate that Bobby Rahal, a great ambassador for the sport, lent his prestige and his energy, and joined our board,” said Argetsinger (pictured at left, above, with Rahal). “And then [there was] the excitement when he became our chairman. His contribution was truly enormous.

“I’m so proud to represent the Argetsinger family, to be here to present this award to a man who so richly deserves it. Tonight I can’t think of anyone else better in this country than Bobby Rahal [to receive] this award. He’s been a great help to the IMRRC as well as young drivers around the world.”

Throughout the evening salutes were given in person and by video. Among them were previous Argetsinger Award recipients Roger Penske, in the audience, as well as Ganassi, Petty and Andretti via video, and Jim France via statement. The videos made by racers from all corners of motorsports included Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, JR Hildebrand, Scott Dixon, Zak Brown, Takuma Sato, Danica Patrick, John Force, Lisa Boggs of Firestone, David Hobbs, and competitors from a number of different series.

Speaker after speaker told stories of the intense commitment and passion that Rahal has shown throughout his career as a driver and team owner.

NHRA Drag Racing champion Force, whose daughter Courtney is married to Rahal’s son Graham, said, “It’s all about your family, those children, and those grandchildren, those boys and girls, men and women that you have raised. Let me just tell you, you know that’s better than all the trophies put together, because whether you like it or not, we’re family.”

Said Penske, the 2016 recipient of the award, “Bobby, you’re a great driver, a champion. I think the commitment by all of us here tonight is to be able to give back. And, I think that’s probably the most important thing I’ve heard tonight is what you give back to other people, and I think that’s so important in the world we live in today and what’s taking place. We need to be leaders. Bobby Rahal is a leader. He’s a friend and I want to congratulate you tonight for the award you well deserve.”

Graham Rahal spoke from a video, saying, “There is not a better person to be getting this award. It’s just that simple. There’s not a better person.”

Added Jay Frye, president of IndyCar, “One of the highlights of my job is being around people like Bobby every day.”

“I can’t thank enough the Argetsinger family for this award,” said Rahal. “I’ve had the privilege to work with J.C. and [son] Duke, the whole family, their mother over the years here. I really thank my old friends on the board of the IMRRC. I think the Center is fortunate to have the caliber of board members that it has.

“And, I want to thank all of you for coming and the nice things you said about me tonight. It’s a family honor and [the IMRRC] is also a very good cause.”

In addition to Sahlen’s, NASCAR, ISC, WGI and IMSA, award dinner sponsors and supporters included Corning Enterprises and Corning Incorporated Foundation, Team Penske, Hilliard Corp., Welliver, Elmira Savings Bank, Honda Racing, Porsche Cars North America, BMW of North America, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Chip Ganassi Racing, SCCA Inc. and Foundation, Gorsline Company, Byers Automotive, Michelin and Glenora Wine Cellars. The dinner is also supported by IMRRC Governing Council members Gregory G. Galdi, Larry Kessler, Bob Newman and Archie Urciuoli.

The evening concluded with the live auction of an original, commissioned painting by motorsports artist Randy Owens depicting Rahal’s 1986 Indy 500 victory. A silent auction offered a variety of items from corporate leaders in the motorsports industry and the Finger Lakes Region of New York, and members of the IMRRC’s Governing Council.

Two cars were displayed, representing Rahal’s career as an IndyCar driver and as a current team owner in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship: The 1989 Lola T89/00 Cosworth that Rahal drove on IndyCar road and street circuits, scoring the only win for a Cosworth engine and for Rahal during the 1989 season; and the BMW M8 GTE, introduced in 2018 at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. In 2019, it was driven to victory for BMW Team RLL at the Rolex 24 by Connor De Phillippi, Augusto Farfus, Colton Herta and Philipp Eng, 43 years after its ancestor, the BMW 3.0 CSL, won the Florida classic.

The IMRRC’s 2019 fundraising raffle car, a 1986 Ferrari 328 GTS, was also on view.

The International Motor Racing Research Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to collect, preserve and share the history of global motorsports. Additional information is available at racingarchives.org.

The Argetsinger Award was established to honor a person in the motorsports industry who is recognized universally for having advanced and improved the sport. The honoree brings prestige to motorsports and demonstrates commitment to the future of racing.

Royal Automobile Club Awards Segrave Trophy to Youngest Ever Recipient – Billy Monger

Thank you to VM Contributor Steve Havelock for sharing this news with us. Check out Racer for more information on Billy Monger and his latest endeavors in the cockpit.

Wednesday 31 July 2019: The Royal Automobile Club, today, awarded the prestigious Segrave Trophy to double amputee racing driver Billy Monger. Acknowledging the young man’s remarkable return to racing after an horrific accident, the citation for the award reads; ‘for demonstrating exceptional courage and determination after great adversity and returning to high levels of motorsport.’

Speaking at the presentation lunch, Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said, ‘Lady Segrave commissioned the Trophy in 1930, soon after her husband, Sir Henry Segrave died after breaking the water speed record on Lake Windermere. It was her wish that the Trophy would celebrate British nationals who demonstrated outstanding skill, courage and initiative ‒ the spirit of adventure ‒ whether on land, sea or air’.

He continued ‘We are delighted to award the Trophy to Billy whose comeback to the sport, which included the overturning of existing FIA regulations, has been extraordinary and demonstrates exceptional bravery and determination. He represents everything that Lady Segrave wanted to honour and that Sir Henry would have admired.’

Upon receiving the Trophy, Monger said: ‘My life has become so busy with my Formula 1 commentary and my own racing I haven’t had a chance to digest how amazing this award is. But I stayed at Pall Mall last night and it’s starting to sink in just how incredible it is. I’m super proud.’

20-Year-old Billy Monger is the youngest ever recipient of the Segrave Trophy. Prior to his professional career in British F4 in 2016, Billy raced karts and successfully competed in the Ginetta Junior Championship. In 2016, Monger joined the F4 British Championship with JHR Developments securing three podiums and finished 12th in the Championship. He was affectionally nicknamed ‘Billy Whizz’.

In April 2017 he was critically injured when he was involved in a high-speed crash at Donington Park. Both of his legs had to be amputated. Fuelled by an outpouring of support from the legions of racing fans and the motorsport industry, Billy embarked on his remarkable journey to race again.

Just three months later in July 2017, Monger was back behind the wheel at Brands Hatch and was invited by Carlin to try out a simulator and almost immediately started posting better times than other drivers in the team.

In March 2018, Monger made his remarkable return to racing with Carlin in the BRDC British F3 Championship, a series that has fostered drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo. The car was adapted to his needs, such as moving the brake pedal and replacing the throttle pedal with a lever mounted on the steering wheel.

Billy’s remarkable return to racing saw him record his first single-seater win at the Pau Grand Prix Euroformula Open race on 19th May this year, driving for Carlin.

The Royal Automobile Club also awarded Trevor Carlin of Carlin Motorsport the Segrave Medal in recognition of the fundamental role that he has played on Billy’s journey back to motorsport.

The Segrave Medal, presented at the Club’s discretion, is only awarded in conjunction with the trophy when the Committee feels it’s justified. It was last awarded in 2014 to Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi’s Head of Motorsport and team drivers Tom Kristensen and Loïc Duval for their contribution to Allan McNish’s dramatic victories at Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World Endurance Championship.

Upon receiving the Medal, Carlin said ‘I’m delighted to be included on such a staggering list of legends. In a hundred years’ time when people look back and hear Billy’s story, they will say how on earth did he ever manage that – I’m delighted to be a part of that story.’

The latest charitable efforts led by Corvette Racing and its crew chief Dan Binks raised $25,000 last weekend at Road America. The site of IMSA’s annual visit to Wisconsin has served as a regular backdrop for the championship-winning program’s efforts to raise funds for Camp Anokijig, a nearby summer camp that offers leadership and educational opportunities for boys and girls ranging in age from 7-16.

Held in the Corvette Corral, used body panels, crew clothing, and other authentic, race-worn parts were auctioned off and autographed by Corvette Racing’s drivers as a large audience turned out to show its support for the camp that groomed Binks decades ago.

Now serving as one of Camp Anokijig’s board members, Binks and his Corvette Racing family have generated almost $500,000 for a facility that is closing in on its 100th anniversary.

“The outpouring of generosity from IMSA fans and everybody pulling together to help these kids is overwhelming,” Binks told RACER. “There’s something here that touches a chord with people, and it’s amazing to see how much was raised in 45 minutes.”
