Rob Dyson, retired American sports-car racing driver and owner of Dyson Racing, has been named the 2019 recipient of the RRDC Bob Akin Award. He was presented the award at the annual Road Racing Drivers Club members’ dinner on January 22, prior to the running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the season opener of the 2020 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Each recipient of this honor, considered the top award in motorsports for amateur, vintage/historic or semi-professional drivers, is selected by Akin’s son Bobby, RRDC members Brian Redman and Judy Stropus, and approved by RRDC president Bobby Rahal.

The distinctive trophy was conceived by the RRDC in 2003 to honor the memory of longtime RRDC member and past president Bob Akin, who lost his life in a racing accident in 2002.

It was designed by Steuben Glass in Corning, N.Y., and is given to a driver who best exemplifies the extraordinary qualities and characteristics that Akin represented, including a passion for motorsports and automobiles, a high level of sportsmanship and fair play, and who has contributed to the sport of motor racing and the community at large.

The primary award, etched with the names of the recipients, is displayed at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, N.Y. Each honoree receives a smaller replica.

Dyson, 73, began competing in amateur SCCA competition in 1974 and in 1981 won the Sports Car Club of America’s GT2 national championship.

He began racing professionally in IMSA GTO and the SCCA Trans-Am Series in 1982. Over the course of 21 seasons as a professional driver Dyson drove in 92 races, scoring four overall race wins (including the 1997 Rolex 24 at Daytona) and a total of 18 podium finishes.

Dyson continued to compete episodically in professional racing through 2007 and today remains active driving his collection of vintage Indy cars in a variety of demonstration events.

He is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation, a privately-owned international holding company.

A longtime friend of Bob Akin’s, Dyson was presented the Bob Akin Award by Bobby Akin, Stropus and Rahal.

“All past winners of this award have been deserving,” said Akin. “However, even if you rounded them all up you would likely not have the parallels that Rob Dyson has with my father.

“Both hail from the Hudson Valley of New York. Both had the responsibility of running a family business and were driven to succeed. That drive to succeed delayed their racing careers. Both ran successful racing teams often competing against each other in Porsche 962s.

“Rob began racing in 1974 and won an SCCA National Championship. He began racing on a professional level in 1982, drove in 92 races, earning 18 podiums, the highlight being a win here at the Rolex 24.

“Oh, and one last parallel: our winner also has a son who races, Chris. He’s a lot more serious than I, and, like me, calls his dad his best friend.”

“He and I were such great friends,” said Dyson of Bob Akin, “that we would get together often. We had an expression while we were running both against one another but kind of with one another: we wanted to keep the prize money on the East side of the Hudson River. And whenever either one of us did well, either in Daytona, Sebring, or any other race, we were pleased when one of us got into the prize money and we would often have lunch afterwards. And, if he did better than I did, he bought, and if I did better than he did, I bought. So, that’s the way we worked.”

On the significance of receiving this award, Dyson said, “It ignites a lot of great memories related to my racing career but even more great memories of my good friend Bob Akin. And the spirit and comradeship that we had as competitors and as friends during our lives on and off the race track.

“The only thing I’m sorry about is that he’s not here today so that I could give him the Rob Dyson Award. Thank you so much.”

On March 17, Belgian Formula 1 and endurance racing legend Jacky Ickx will join an elite group of non-Americans inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America (MSHFA).

“The MSHFA is unique in that it honors every form of motorsports, (but) for foreign nationals, only achievements in North America are considered,” explained MSHFA President George Levy. “So, among the Hall’s 260 inductees, Ickx joins a very select sub-group that includes only a handful — Derek Bell, Geoff Brabham, Colin Chapman, Jim Clark, Emerson Fittipaldi, Dario Franchitti, Denis Hulme, Bruce McLaren, Nigel Mansell, motorcycle ace and fellow Belgian Roger De Coster and few others.”

Ickx’s accomplishments in North America include the 1979 SCCA Can-Am title (five victories in 10 races) plus endurance racing wins at the 12 Hours of Sebring (1969, 1970), Mosport 1000 kms (1984) and Watkins Glen 6 Hours (1968, 1972, 1977) in everything from Ford GTs to Ferrari 312 PBs and Porsche 956s.

Ickx and Mario Andretti also co-drove to victory in the 1972 Daytona 24 Hours that was shortened to six hours that year due to the gas crisis.

Over the course of his long career, Ickx set an all-time record for most endurance racing wins with 47, including six overall victories at Le Mans. Ever the experimenter, he entered the 1969 Daytona 500 in a Junior Johnson Ford, but a practice crash left him carless for the race.

Said Ickx’s longtime friend and 1990 inductee Andretti, “It is finally time for Jacky Ickx to be honored. I couldn’t be happier to hear of his induction into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Not only was he a terrific driver, he is one of my favorite people. I was his teammate in 11 Grand Prix races for Ferrari — six in 1971 and five in 1972. In the same timeframe, we ran nine long distance races, had six poles, four wins and one second place finish. That’s how much success we had in our very brief time together.

“When I look back at that part of my life, I see this wonderfully successful time that I shared with the most amazing teammate a guy could want. He belongs in the Motorsports Hall of Fame and it brings me great satisfaction that it’s finally happening.”

The son of a prominent Belgian motorsport’s journalist, Ickx raced during one of the sport’s most dangerous eras and was sanguine about the risks.

“It’s racing. It’s a battle. It’s a gladiator job,” said Ickx of racing in the ’60s and ’70s. “The fatalities are part of it. It’s accepted or you don’t do it.”

Ickx burst into the international limelight at 22 when he set the third-fastest qualifying time at the 1967 German Grand Prix in a 1.6-liter Ken Tyrrell-entered Formula 2 Matra against the more powerful 3.0-liter F1 cars. In those days, the organizers added F2 cars to the grid so spectators at the then-14.2-mile circuit would see more action. At season’s end Ickx was crowned European F2 champion.

Soon he graduated to F1 and raced for several teams, including Ferrari, Brabham and Lotus. He collected eight wins, including two Canadian GPs (1969, ’70) and the 1970 Mexican GP, and finished second in the championship both years. Had he won the 1970 United States Grand Prix, which he led easily until his car failed, he might have been that year’s World Driving Champion.

A four-time European motorcycle trials titlist in his youth, Ickx beat De Coster during one of their early battles but joked that he switched to cars shortly thereafter because he realized the eventual five-time World Motocross Champion was going to be better than he was.

“I never wanted to be a race driver – never,” Ickx said. “I heard about Jim Hall and Carroll Shelby and all the others from that generation because my father was an automobile journalist. But honestly, I always thought I would have been a gardener or a gatekeeper. It’s only now that I am getting older that that I can spend some time in my garden. And I love it. But I am very grateful to what I have received because it was totally unexpected and there were good days and also sad days in motor racing.”

Ickx is married to popular African singer Khadja Nin (Sina Mali, Sina Deni, Like an Angel, Afrika Obota), who serves these days as a UNICEF ambassador promoting education and vaccinations and fighting famine. His daughter, Vanina Ickx, from his first marriage, followed him into the cockpit, where she has raced with distinction, collecting class victories at the Spa 24 Hours and the Chinese round of the FIA GT Championship and finished seventh overall at Le Mans in 2011. Father and daughter have co-driven the Spa 24 Hours and Paris-Dakar.

Ickx will be presented for induction by longtime friend and Porsche co-driver Bell (they won Le Mans three times together), who was inducted into the MSHFA in 2012. Inductees are determined by a straight vote among 200 electors, comprised of previous inductees, journalists, historians and other experts on the sport.

The MSHFA’s 32nd Induction Ceremony Presented by Firestone will take place March 17, at the Shores Resort & Spa Hotel. In addition to Ickx, who will be inducted in the Sports Cars category, the evening’s honorees will be Red Byron (Historic), Chris Carr (Motorcycles), Floyd Clymer (At Large), Wally Dallenbach (Open Wheel), Rick Hendrick (Stock Cars), Tiny Lund (Historic), “Ohio George” Montgomery (Drag Racing) and Ivan “Ironman” Stewart (Off Road). MSHFA Induction Week also includes the annual Heroes of Horsepower Reception, Monday, March 16, at the MSHFA Museum, a Monday inductee luncheon and Tuesday inductee breakfast.

Information and tickets for all events are available by visiting http://www.MSHF.com or by calling (386) 681-6843.

In an emotional ceremony Friday night at the Charlotte Convention Center, two champion drivers at NASCAR’s highest level; the owner who fielded cars for both of them; one of the hardest chargers in the history of the sport; and the crew chief/engine builder who guided that driver to victory in the 1980 Daytona 500 all took their places in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Ushered into the Hall were three-time NASCAR Cup champion Tony Stewart, 2000 champion Bobby Labonte, five-time champion car owner Joe Gibbs, 19-time Cup winner and beloved broadcaster Buddy Baker and 19-time race-winning crew chief Waddell Wilson.

Introduced by driver Corey LaJoie, Wilson was the first member of the class of 2020 to be inducted.

The fourth crew chief ushered into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Wilson turned wrenches for a wide array of NASCAR stars, including Baker and fellow NASCAR Hall of Famers Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip and Benny Parsons.

In his second start with Baker, and his second start as a crew chief at NASCAR’s highest level in 1980, Wilson guided Baker first to the Daytona 500 pole and then to the race win. Baker led 143 of the 200 laps and took the checkered flag under caution ahead of Allison, the only other driver on the lead lap.

Eleven years later, Wilson got his final victory as a crew chief in the spring race at Darlington with driver Ricky Rudd.

“Well, I have plenty of stories about races and individuals that I could share with you all, but I don’t want to tell my stories,” said Wilson, who was inducted by daughter Lisa Hawkins and sons Gregg and Freddie Wilson. “What I want to do is to thank all of the people that helped me throughout the years.

“I have been blessed to work with some of the best and most talented people in NASCAR, and I will always be grateful.”

Known as NASCAR’s “Gentle Giant,” Baker was the second member of the class of 2020 to be enshrined, with sister Susie Baker accepting the induction for her brother, who passed away in 2015. With a heart and passion for the sport commensurate with his 6-foot-6 frame, Baker ran his first race at Columbia (S.C.) Speedway in 1959 and his last at Talladega in 1992.

In between, he won 19 times in NASCAR’s premier series, the first victory coming in the fall race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1967. Baker had a predilection for the big races on the larger tracks, and numbers among his wins the 1970 Southern 500 at Darlington, the 1972 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and the 1980 Daytona 500.

Baker went to Victory Lane four times at Talladega, NASCAR’s largest oval, and swept both races there in 1975. The Gentle Giant was especially adept at qualifying, as his 38 poles attest. He is credited with mentoring Ryan Newman, currently foremost among active Cup drivers with 51 poles.

Appropriately, it was Newman who introduced the late driver, who was also known as “Leadfoot.”

“The only thing faster than his wit was his speed in a race car,” Newman said of the man whose 177.602 mph speed record for the Daytona 500 still stands. “…Once he got out front, no one was getting by him.”

Joe Gibbs, the third member of the Class of 2020 to enter the Hall, capped more than two decades of excellence with his fifth Cup championship in 2019, courtesy of driver Kyle Busch. The victory of the No. 18 Toyota in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway was the second for the elite driver, and it completed a season in which Joe Gibbs Racing drivers won a record 19 of 36 points races.

Gibbs’ induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame also had a bittersweet aspect, since it came barely more than a year after the death of his son, J.D. Gibbs, who was integral in building JGR’s success as president of the organization. J.D. Gibbs passed away on Jan. 11, 2019.

J.D.’s brother, Coy Gibbs, performed the induction honors, after an introduction by JGR drivers Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin—and a video appearance by former President George W. Busch. Gibbs, who coached the NFL Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl wins, is the first person to be inducted into both the NFL Hall of Fame (1996) and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

“Whatever he puts his mind to, he achieves it, whether it’s winning the Super Bowl, Daytona 500, NASCAR Championship or just being a great family member,” Hamlin said of the man known simply as “Coach.” “I’m proud to have raced my entire career for a man I’ve looked up to my entire life.”

All told, Gibbs has accumulated 176 Cup victories as a car owner—third behind the 268 of Petty Enterprises and the 256 of NASCAR Hall of Fame owner Rick Hendrick—and fielded the cars for Labonte’s championship in 2000 and for two of Stewart’s three titles, in 2002 and 2005.

Gibbs also has been a prolific winner in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, with his drivers having won 165 races and two championships, with Kyle Busch in 2009 and Daniel Suarez 2016.

“We had 17 people our first year,” Gibbs recalled of his initial—and successful—plea for sponsorship to Norm Miller of Interstate Batteries. “At that point, JGR was born. I was so nervous coming from football over to racing. How were we going to be accepted, the family, everybody?

“I just want to say big thanks to everybody here. The NASCAR family—just unreal. I want to say to the France family: thanks for your guidance, leadership and the way you accepted us. The fans, the fellow competitors, all you guys… that meant so much to us as we took off in racing.

“The problem was, you’ve got to win.”

That’s exactly what Gibbs did. After a barren inaugural season in 1992, he fielded the race-winning car for Dale Jarrett in the 1993 season-opening Daytona 500.

Current Roush Fenway Racing driver Chris Buescher introduced Labonte, a fellow Texan.

Labonte, the fourth member of the 2020 class inducted Friday night, follows his brother, Terry Labonte, into the NASCAR Hall of Fame—becoming part of the second “brother act” to earn that distinction, the first being Glen and Leonard Wood. Years earlier, with his Cup championship in 2000, Labonte became the first driver to win titles in what is now the NASCAR Xfinity Series (1991, with his family team) and in NASCAR’s premier division.

Labonte won 21 Cup races and 26 poles during a career that spanned 26 years. His most prolific period came in the 1999 and 2000 seasons, when he collected nine of his 21 victories. During his championship season, Labonte took the checkered flag in the vaunted Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Labonte developed an obvious fondness for Atlanta Motor Speedway, where the claimed six of his 21 wins.

Terry Labonte, a member of the class of 2016, inducted his brother.

“To be inducted along with legends, to be added to the Hall with the previous inductees and to be a part of NASCAR, I’m very, very grateful,” Bobby Labonte said. “From as early as I can remember, there were two things I did as a kid. I raced quarter midgets in South Texas, and I watched my brother race.

“I idolized him. So, after all these years, I stand before you, following in my brother’s footsteps. I’m even wearing the same tie he wore on his induction night.”

Stewart’s long-time hero, A.J. Foyt, provided an introductory video, citing Stewart’s accomplishments in a wide variety of racing disciplines, but concluding with the statement, “But you know, Tony, you could never beat me.”

Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick followed with an introduction from the stage.

Stewart, Friday night’s final inductee, earned two of his three NASCAR Cup titles with Gibbs before embarking on a partnership with Gene Haas to form Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. In 2011, Stewart won five of 10 Playoff races, including the season finale at Homestead, to claim his final championship in a tiebreaker over Carl Edwards.

The quick-witted Stewart retired from full-time Cup racing in 2016 after winning his 49th and final event at Sonoma Raceway that same year. As a co-owner with Haas, he fielded Harvick’s championship-winning car in 2014. Since its inception, Stewart-Haas has accumulated 55 Cup wins and 53 poles.

Stewart said he felt honored to be one of such a small number to become a NASCAR Hall of Fame member.

“I’m not old … or, at least, I don’t feel like I’m old,” said Stewart, who was inducted by Haas. “I’m still racing. In fact, I’m racing now more than I ever have in the past. And in my mind, the NASCAR Hall of Fame is there to honor the completion of one’s career…

“But in the eight months since being nominated to this year’s class, I’ve come to appreciate what an honor it is. I’m one of just 55 people to be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. And, considering that NASCAR has been around for more than 70 years, I think that’s pretty much nuts for me to be here. It truly is an elite group, and it’s incredibly humbling to be a part of it.”

Edsel Ford II, great-grandson of Henry Ford and current board member of the Ford Motor Company, received the Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR from NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France and Vice Chairperson of the Board of Directors of NASCAR Lesa France Kennedy. At the NASCAR Hall of Fame dinner that preceded the induction ceremony, long-time broadcaster Dick Berggren was honored with the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence. Ken Squirer was the "voice of NASCAR" for many years, and now owns a small race track up north.

Dyson Receives RRDC Bob Akin Award

EmailDaytona, FL — Rob Dyson, retired American sports car racing driver and owner of Dyson Racing, was presented with the Road Racing Drivers Club’s Bob Akin Award during the annual RRDC members’ dinner on Jan. 22.
Photo: Brian ClearyConsidered the top award in motorsports for amateur, vintage/historic or semi-professional drivers, each honoree is selected by Akin’s son, Bobby, along with RRDC members Brian Redman and Judy Stropus, then approved by RRDC president Bobby Rahal.

The distinctive trophy was conceived by the RRDC in 2003 to honor the memory of longtime RRDC member and past president Bob Akin, who lost his life in a racing accident in 2002.

It was designed by Steuben Glass in Corning, N.Y., and is given to a driver who best exemplifies the extraordinary qualities and characteristics that Akin represented — including a passion for motorsports and automobiles as well as a high level of sportsmanship and fair play — and who has made contributions to the sport of motor racing and the community at large.

Over the course of 21 seasons as a professional driver, Dyson drove in 92 races, scoring four overall race wins (including the 1997 Rolex 24 at Daytona) and a total of 18 podium finishes.

Dyson continued to compete in professional racing through 2007 and today remains active driving his collection of vintage Indy cars in a variety of demonstration events.

He is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dyson-Kissner-Moran Corporation, a privately-owned international holding company.

A longtime friend of Bob Akin’s, Dyson was presented the award by Bobby Akin, Stropus and Rahal.

“Oh, and one last parallel: our winner also has a son, Chris, who races. He’s a lot more serious than I, and, like me, calls his dad his best friend.”

“He and I were such great friends,” said Dyson of Bob Akin, “that we would get together often. We had an expression while we were running both against one another, but kind of with one another: we wanted to keep the prize money on the East side of the Hudson River. And whenever either one of us did well, either in Daytona, Sebring or any other race, we were pleased when one of us got into the prize money and we would often have lunch afterwards.

Default We are all passengers in the same boat on the sea of uncertainty

We are all passengers in the same boat on the sea of uncertainty. We have gone from annual preparations of creating memories in the sand, to making masks for our local BayCare hospitals. Our goal was to make 600 masks in 6 days and we are thrilled to report 150 were sent to St. Josephs Hospital NICU in Tampa, and 524 to BayCare for a total of 674 masks! Like many of you, we have felt a little lost lately. We are thankful for the opportunity to be able to support our medical community. Everyone is now at home and adhering to the safer at home guidelines.

We look forward to creating more memories with you in 2021, until then – wishes for safety and good health.

First Hardpoint Foundation crew grants go out

The Hardpoint Paddock Foundation, founded by IMSA racer and team owner Rob Ferriol to provide financial assistance to crew members during the coronavirus shutdown, has started to distribute funds to its first series of applicants.

Through its #RealRacingHeroes campaign launched in March, the non-profit charity has generated income through the sale of merchandise and via a GoFundMe page, which has reached nearly $10,000 in donations that are being rerouted to the paddock.

On Wednesday, one-time $1500 grants were released to an unspecified number of crew members.

“From the moment we announced the campaign, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We’ve seen people from all corners of the race economy rally together to support the campaign — gentleman drivers, pro drivers, fans, and even other crew members,” Ferriol said.

With more support received for the initiative, Ferriol hopes to distribute additional emergency checks.

“The fundraising has definitely been encouraging, though I’ll say it hasn’t paced quite as quickly as the apparel sales,” he added. “That said, I think it’s a function of timing — the apparel was rolled out first, with the fundraising site shortly after, so it’s not unanticipated. The GoFundMe page has definitely picked up in recent days, and we’ve received a number of mail-in donations as well, so that’s been exciting to see. My hope is that it continues to gain momentum as the weeks go on, and more people learn about the program.

“Since my very first start in IMSA, I’ve been in awe of the men and women that make up the crews around the paddock. They’re a hard-working, resilient bunch who love racing as much as the rest of us. You’ve heard me say it before: first ones in, last ones out. They work long days and nights to ensure drivers and team owners have competitive cars to field for our fans, so I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to put the shoe on the other foot and help them during this crisis.”

Lando Norris has selected a six-year-old’s helmet design to run at the British Grand Prix after a competition for his home race.

The McLaren driver announced early in the year that he would be selecting a special helmet design for Silverstone that would be provided by his fans, asking them to send in their entries for the helmet he should use. On Thursday ahead of the first race, Norris revealed the winning entry and has picked a design from six-year-old Eva Muttram.

“Eva’s six and she created this for my design competition and it just reminded me a lot of when I was younger scribbling away coming up with some cool things, it’s just super original,” Norris said.

“I’m a big fan of changing things up on my helmet and expressing myself and creating cool things. It was meant to be for one race in Silverstone, to give it out to the fans and let the fans create some awesome ideas, some awesome designs and let them choose what I would race in at my home grand prix.

“Eva was the winner — six years old — who came up with a very original design. One that really brought me back to when I was five, six, seven, growing up and creating all of my own designs and my own helmets. Just a normal coloring pencil and pens and so on, nothing to do with Photoshop or anything like that.

“So it just brought back some cool memories and I announced she was the winner today. Something different, something cool and it seems to be going down pretty well so I’m very happy.”

Norris will run Eva’s design throughout the race weekend at Silverstone, but says he’d like to use some of the other designs he was sent throughout a full season at some stage of his career.

“We went through a huge amount of designs, probably thousands of them,” he noted, “so thanks to every single person who took some time and did a helmet design and sent it in. There were so many, honestly. I want to do one year of Formula 1 just with fan helmets — every single weekend have another helmet designed by a fan. That’s what I would love to do because there’s so many cool designs from everyone.”
