Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Competizione that finished 2nd overall at Daytona

1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione Series III by Colin Wood

When the checkered flag dropped over the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1979, it was this very Ferrari 365 GTB/4 that crossed the finish line in 2nd place overall–and first in its class.



First campaigned at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1973 under the NART banner, the Daytona is one of just 15 Competizione models produced by Ferrari and one of only five Series III models built.

Additional race history includes outings at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen and 12 Hours of Sebring, driven by several notable racers like Robert Reed Carradine, John Morton, Milt Minter and Sam Posey.



In 1980, the 365 GTB/4 made the transition to vintage racing, competing in the Monterey Historics, Sebring Vintage Races and Shell Ferrari Maserati Historic Challenge.

Under the care of its current owner, the Ferrari underwent a comprehensive restoration to return it to its 1973 Le Mans specifications, and soon after won the Enzo Ferrari Trophy at the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.



Today, the car is accompanied by a correct tool kit, spare wheels, period photos, a Marcel Massini report and more.

Tampa Florida's Hal Williamson drove to Daytona in his Porsche 911, won its class at the 24 Hours of Daytona in ’67 and after the race, he put the racing tires into the back seat and drove it back home!

And he did it every year until 1970, when the 911 returned to the street full time.

For years he drove it to work and parked it outside his office on Howard Avenue.

An extraordinary car with an extraordinary history usually has extraordinary people behind it. That’s certainly the case for this Porsche 911, the winner of its class at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1967.



The drivers behind that feat? Dr. Harold Williamson of Tampa Florida and George Drolsom. Before Dr. Williamson became an orthopedic surgeon, he joined the U.S. Army Air Forces after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He flew a P-38 Lightning and later served as a B-25 Mitchell flight instructor. Drolsom was he first non-German in the U.S. hired by the Porsche factory. He competed 13 times in the 24 Hours of Daytona and was one of the founders of The Amelia Concours d’Elegance.



After winning their class, the team brought it back to its street-faring form, put the racing tires into the back seat and it was driven home. In 1970, the 911 returned to the street full time. Today it wears the same livery as it did during the 1969 Daytona race, where the Porsche placed second in its class in that year.

Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier. Daytona 24 winner Jack Baldwin. Five-time Daytona winner and three-time Le Mans winner Hurley Haywood. These are just three of the drivers who took turns behind this Riley & Scott during the three times it entered the Rolex 24 At Daytona from 1999 to 2001.



Despite having winning racers pilot this car, and fast qualifying runs, the Riley & Scott just couldn’t finish well, if it even finished. In 1999, it made 299 laps before its Chevrolet V8 had issues, finishing in 55th. In 2000, the car crossed the line at the checkers but placed 35th. In 2001, after qualifying second, the new Judd V10 expired after turning 563 laps, relegating the team to a 22nd and a DNF.



In recent times the previous owner campaigned it in events such as the HSR Classic 24 Hour at Daytona and HSR Classic 12 Hour at Sebring. It is now fitted with a 6-liter Ford V8 and is sold with a “very important quantity of spare parts.”
