David Pearson explains in Victory Lane how he managed to get his thoroughly crashed Mercury across the finish line to win the 1976 Daytona 500. Pearson crashed with Richard Petty, but was able to limp across the line.

There was once a time when a driver, after qualifying for the 500 would pull into the grass
and every photographer and pit passed spectator could take a picture.
