Heres an Update

Ok, I went out and bought a new Distributor Cap and Rotor, and then Replaced it all about 2 hours ago. I go to start the car, and it wont start, all it did was BackFire. So I called up a guy I know at Advance Auto Parts to make sure I have the correct ignition wire firing order, and I did. The car still wont start... Im hoping im not going to have to buy a whole new distributor

 

you bought a USED car. there are going to be somethings wrong with a 1979 car!

anyway they all seem like cheap fixes anyway.

hehe, well, I wanted to make the list seem very long and disturbing, LoL! So I had to come up with some things to help my point. Ive fixed most of it, but this damn car is still not startiiiiing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

His oil filled air cleaner housing and filter are due to oil coming up through the PCV system.

While it could just be a PCV malfunction there is the possibility that his rings are shot and the blow by gasses are blowing oil through the PCV system into the air cleaner.

If you wanted to buy a project car you certainly got one.

 

Ya, my PCV Valve is bye-bye.. as in... there, but doing absolutely nothing to help the car. I sure did get a project car, and it's about to become a project explosive if I dont start getting some progress out of it.

 

Actually, $1400 for a Mustang like you described isn't too far off. If that was you I saw Sat on Ulmerton, I will say that it's at least an excellent 50/50 car. That's one that looks good from 50 feet away and going 50 mph. The oil sucking pcv's are standard issue. Either get another one or you can ditch all that stuff too. The ozone hole will never notice, I guarantee.

You're 16 and you've got a good start on what can be a decent running and looking car given a little time and money. Figure out if you want it to be pretty, or fast...or both, do some reasearch and hang with the guys who know what they're doing with Mustangs and you will be just fine in no time at all.

That blows...I bought my car for 2000 and it ran strong, and still does. 14.5 with nothin but a K&N.....and thats FWD

 

Ray, at first, I only installed new Ignition wires, and after I installed them, the car was running fine, but then I found out I had a bad distributor cap and rotor, so I installed new ones yesterday, and pull all the wires back on the cap in the correct order that the guy I know at Advance Auto Parts gave me. When I tried to start the car, it just hummed and hummed, and one time, even backfired. Im in Clearwater, not Tampa :\
