Oct. 30: The condition of John Lingenfelter, severely injured in a racing accident at the Mazda NHRA Sport Compact Finals presented by Toyo Tires, has improved dramatically following surgery Tuesday night at Pomona Valley Hospital to repair his neck, which was broken in the high-speed accident
The surgery, originally scheduled to last four hours, only required two and half-hour for doctors to fuse the vertebrae broken at the C-7 level.
"John's still sedated, but he's moving all of his limbs, he's opened his eyes, and he's ready to wake up as soon as he comes out of sedation," said team spokesperson Brent Malone. "The doctors were pleased with the way the operation went; they didn't find any surprises and there were no complications. Everything's normal - his breathing, his heart rate. We're looking at a real speedy recovery. It all looks really good. His condition is stable, but improving by the minute."
The team has asked friends and fans please not call the race shop for details, and that all information will be released by the team to the media for dissemination. NHRASportCompact.com will update this information as soon as it is available.
"We appreciate the great interest in John's condition," said Malone, "and all the well wishes and prayers sent his way. John's a Christian man and he could use everyone's prayers."

Oct. 28: Pro driver John Lingenfelter, severely injured in a racing accident in Sunday's semifinal round, will undergo surgery Tuesday at Pomona Valley Hospital as doctors try to fully determine the extent of his injuries to better treat him. He is in critical but stable condition and heavily sedated by the medical team to prevent further possible complications prior to surgery.
"The good news that I can share with everyone is that John was receptive to the presence of his wife, Cindy, last night, which is a good sign," said team spokesperson Brent Malone. "We ask that everyone offer their prayers and thoughts to John for a safe and speedy recovery."
NHRASportCompact.com will serve as an official venue for updates on Lingenfelter's condition, and the team has requested that fellow racers, fans, and sponsors please not contact either the hospital or the team shop for details.
Lingenfelter was racing R.J. Simrock in the semifinals of the Mazda NHRA Sport Compact World Finals at Pomona Raceway when he lost control of his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Cavalier, crossed the centerline, and hit the guardwall in the opposite lane. According to witnesses, it appeared that Lingenfelter may have been knocked unconscious upon impact, as his car proceeded off the end of the track under power before coming to rest against a safety barrier at track's end.
