Soon to be 100+ pound Bulldog and a Boxer mix.

Putting the seat down takes away the need for more than 2 seats.

Mazda 5 is worth a look. I recently sold mine to get out from a car payment due to a new baby. Certainly isn't the fastest thing but it handles well, is pretty spunky around town, gets pretty good gas mileage, and swallows a crap ton of cargo with all the seats folded down (plus easy to get crap in and out with the sliding doors).

CX7 is another good one. I think you can get it with or without the turbo motor now.

It needs more middle fingers being flown and a dog chewing on the bumper. Yes my dog tries to eat cars now.

The caliber has brake issues. Almost as bad as what happened to Toyota with the gas pedal issue. I would not recommend a Caliber to anyone.

Edit: break = brake

You gotta let her know function>form. The flex seems like a pretty nice ride out of what's available.
