Alternator, AC, power steering, things of that nature. The RB doesn't have them, but the VQ does, as does the 1UZ. A long block sitting next to a short block is obviously going to look bulkier.

even without the accessories you can see how much bulk the external cams in the heads add. I can see that DOHC engines will make more power, but if you cant fit them in the car its pointless.

Even with them there is a huge size difference. The alternator hugs pretty tightly. As does the PS pump
here's fully dressed with ac compressor on there too
