Full of RICE
I agree with the op, but you have to understand that kbb value is one thing and value within the Honda niche is another.
Something will only have as much value as there is a demand for it. These people want "riceboxes".

see this alot in the bagged/street truck world as well. but most of it depends on the quality of work, and the parts used. you see some guys trying to sell their stock s-10 that they bagged with a stick welder and a torch trying to sell it for $7000. when for just as much, you can buy a truck that is show quality and built by a reputable shop. then some sell for less than what it would stock. it all goes back to the owner, and how much they really know what they have, and whatever the buyer is willing to pay for it. I have seen people pay outrageous amounts for hacked up pos'es because they didn't know what they were looking at, or fed into the buyers line of bs about why it was worth so much. but these trucks only have value to a certain crod who are into them. to everyone else mods may decrease value. while to someone who is into the scene, they are willing to pay way more for it because of the work. but if you try to trade you will get absolutely nothing for it, even though you ave spent all that money making it just how you want. dealerships and non vehicle enthusiasts don't see mod values the same way we do

you almost never get back what you put in, i had almost 7k into a 97 neon
and i never even thought to try and sell it for that much.....my best way was to part with almost every aftermarket part i had and brought my investment down to 2k then made a few trades and only ended up taking about a $300-500 loss. i see so many p.o.s cars with "swaps" that cost $500 and try to sell for thousands.....i always think this when i look at and 240. they use to be cheap and the older ones in my opinion are garbage and i wouldn't be caught dead driving one, but these 240 people think there worth soooo much and they actually sell the stupid things?
-BTW since when is a crx worth more than a piece of scrap metal for a junk yard? yet another car because of the fad causing them to hold some sort of value.

It depends on the level that they took it to. If you see an engine for $2000 on eBay, that doesn't mean a swap costs $2,000. There's little stuff that adds up (unbelievably quick), and the labor you put into it makes it worth more than shell + engine. That being said, the VAST majority of swaps and parts in general are installed in a half-ass manner. You can't even trust shops these days. While I vehemently agree that most people think their work is worth may more than it actually is, you do have to really look at the car and the details of the work done to put a value to it.
Example, I remember a thread on Supraforums a while back where this VERY highly respected shop was building a dedicated road race car (their specialty) out of an S2000, using a 2JZ that while longer, was tucked far enough back into the highly modified firewall that it was completely behind the front shock towers, and hence a mid-engine. Almost the entire car was tube framed, of course hardtop welded in, fuel cell, single seat, hundreds of pounds shaved, etc. etc., and people kept saying, "Nice 2J swap, there's some shop in Florida that does this," and "nice swap, I've seen those," "Are you selling a kit? I wanna do this swap." The builders were getting so furious that people just looked at it as a simple "2J swap," despite everything they were doing to the car as a whole.
Extreme example, but the point is that you have to look at more than just what engine they chose.

IDK i think its just random ass people. I like I see people asking 3-5k for a busted up E30 when u can get a Decent E36 for that price even though that is still high for an E36.

very true all of these OP, I am glad had such a good one day turnout. As far as s2k 2jz build, thats a one off race car and can't be bracketed with the DD and weekend warrriors, and average man couldn't afford it anyway, and yes quality of work has a HUGE factor in things but I could swap a 0 miles fresh sr20det into a Immaculate 92 240sx with all supporting mods and no knock off parts....and retain all my OEM features...but it still doesn't make it worth8 or 9k IMO and thats all between the buyer and seller. Purpose of this thread was hopefully to open some eyes of buyers so this outrageous prices and inflation could someday come down.... but one forum thread on TR will have 0 effect on it.
