How to find and fix a Drain/Short?
Hi all.. Last few weeks having been killing me on my 2002 Crown Vic P71...
Car has a drain when the car is off.. at around 3.5 to 4.0 amps.. It will kill a good battery dead in 1 night...
things I have tried and replaced...
Alternator 3 times.. with used ones... (ford sometimes has problems with the internal voltage regulator..)
But still if you unplug the Alternators voltage regulator when car is off the drain is gone...
Battery twice.. Car now has a Brand new Optima red top in it..
I started doing the old way of removing fuses till drain is gone...
Has something to do with the ABS pump.. fuse Number 32 in the car..
yea great car runs without it.. But dam alternator will not charge the car if the ABS fuse is not there...
So tested it by leaving the fuse out. over night.. battery is dead by morning...
im so frustrated with this domestic pile of shit....
Was going to install a Battery cutoff switch.. but Id rather fix the problem first...
any other leads anyone can go on?? or a reputable shop that could fix it??

^ it almost does... many people are saying the same problem.. but no one has said a fix..
he is saying alternator harness.. but its directly into the main harness for the motor...

When checking for an electrical draw, use an amp meter(common on most volt meters). First, disconnect the posative battery cable, then connect your amp meter between the battery cable and the battery terminal... this completes the circuit through the meter and will show you how many amps are drawing on the battery. MAKE SURE all accessories are off and doors are closed(ie: no extra draws on battery).
NOW, you are looking for a reading that is less than .10 or one tenth of an amp... if it is more, start pulling fuses and tracking it down(a power distribution wiring diagram is very helpful when you locate the fuse causing the draw). Start with the mega fuses and narrow down the circuit, once you found the circuit get a diagram that shows what fuses/accessories run off of it.

What an annoying ass problem to deal with. I agree with Cordite, start narrowing down the problem one fuse at a time. Did you change something on the car around the time this started happening?

I kinda narrowed it down.. to one maxi fuse under the dash... Fuse number 32... its a 20 amp.. if I pull it the drains gone..
I cant find a schematic for the wiring of the car.. to see what circuit is on it.
