This is what happens with bad fitment.
My roommate got new wheels and tires for his BMW last year. 19" CSL replica wheels... I think they are like 8.5" or 9" wide on the front and maybe 10" on the back. Stock was 17x7". He put 235/35's on front and 265/30's on back. The tires are so not wide enough for those wheels, and sidewalls are too thin. When you lay the wheels down they hit the rim instead of the tire. Fronts have curb rash all over them already 'cause they stick out too far and the tire rim guard doesn't work. I told him to get different wheels and/or bigger tires... but he went with those because the guys on the bimmer forums told him those would look cooler and have a better stance.
So he hit a pot hole the other day and this is what happened... just like I told him it would. So much for the rubber band look.

^pot hole.
Stretching has its downsides (wheel can get damaged easier), but most people who do it are willing to make sacrifices for looks.
I just can't believe anyone would want a smaller contact area than what they could get with a wider tire. I run the widest tire I can fit on my wheels because I want as much grip as I can get at all four corners.

You gotta pay to play. Thats not even a decent stretch.

Thats how you stretch. 215s on an 11 inch wide wheel.

hehe, that's my whole point... stretching is stupid and shouldn't be done. It's not the correct way to do things and this is what happens. I wasn't in the car when it happened, but he said there was another car in front of him so he didn't see the pothole coming in time and couldn't avoid it. Now he has to buy a new rim. But anyway I'm with robofunc, I want as much tire as I can fit on my rims for more grip.

Stretched tires or not, potholes fuck up rims every day, putting tires that are too wide for your rims is just as dangerous and less practical when running larger than OE wheels on a car. If you don't want to curb your wheels, don't lay them down on the face like a retard, and don't hit curbs. Its not hard. There a price to pay when you modify your car regardless of what you do to modify it. You can have an 11 second street car with a 4 puck carbon clutch, and traffic jams are going to suck ass. You can have a vw with bags and $3000 mercedes wheels, but if you change lanes over a reflector you'll knock off your oil pan.
OP - "your friend" can't drive
Seriously, how hard is it to NOT hit the curb? Thats not even a stretch, I've ran stretched and never hit a curb. You are blaming a non existent condition on your friends inability to judge distance, and ability to pay attention to road hazards

I know a lot of the JDM and Euro guys love that, but I truly think its one of the most retarded trends Ive ever seen. Im sorry, but something that obviously doesnt fit does not look good. Its just as bad as that donk crap.
