This is what happens with bad fitment.
That stretching shit is stupid. "Yeah let's spend lots of money on rims, then tires no wider than a spare to give LESS traction, cornering, etc!"
I swear, all these new bullshit form over function things are absolutely ridiculous. Fucked up camber, retarded offset, kids spending all damn day researching offsets/backspacings to get the PERFECT flush look, and the ones who like to be so low they replace oil pans every week. Real smart! If only everyone could be so JDM/Euro/foreign/stupid.
/rant - Nothing to see here, move along.

Oh my god. Shut the fuck up. I guess its easier to just throw some sweet weld wheels or bullitt reps on your bad-ass 'merican muscle car with some 295's and think its the coolest thing since sliced bread. I swear some of the people on this site are borderline retarded.
Hey retards... I never personally called it "stretch". Someone else said that. I said they are too small, and they are. That's why his rim is bent. The tires are too fucking narrow and too thin for the rims... that's why he bent a rim. A properly modified street driven car should be able to go through a pot hole or over a speed bump and the tire should absorb it, not the wheel. If you want ridiculously thin tires on your rims, it should be on a trailered show car. A street car has to be able to deal with the real world, and in the real world there are road hazards. I'm sure I'm wasting my time explaining this though 'cause some of you obviously don't live in the real world.
those tires fit fine on those wheels, tell your friend to quit driing like an idiot.
small sidewall tires are leaving the wheel more prone to damage whether it's a stretch or not. a stretched tire likely has an even stiffer sidewall because of the stretch.
depends on the pothole, the speed, and just luck sometimes. i've managed to hit a few nasty potholes and come out unscathed, though i've had friends kill a wheel in a pothole that isn't even that bad, but they hit it just 'right'.
i can dig a mild stretch sometimes. as with any decent trend/fad, it's always ruined by some people taking it too far (and consequently thinking it's actually cooler to be more extreme).

There are several truths in this thread.
First...the dude with the bend rim is at fault. When you go low profile you learn to watch the road extra carefully. The damage is the drivers fault.
Second...stretching is ghey, period. it doesnt look good. period. Buy some wheels that fit. Stretching a thin tire to fit a wide rim is like a size 18 girl stuffed into a size 8, its wrong and it looks like crap, and people will be laughing at it.
Third...watching jap and euro guys get all butt hurt because someone on the internet doesnt like their stuff is the best entertainment ever. EVER.

Its almost as entertaining as all the other people with big tires and shitty fitment bitch about those that do stretch.
many of which were not typed by you...
That is a fact. Ultimately, he had control of the steering, brakes, and accelerator. That kind of damage is directly due to the driver's inability to judge distance and pay attention to the road.
My opinion is, he would have bent his OEM rims on the same pot hole, and curbed his OEM wheels as well. I'll even hedge that his OEM rims ARE curbed.
And here is an example of an opinion. Are you familiar with the term "looks are subjective"? Just because you don't like it does not make it fact, nor does your opinion matter to most people.
Ever? Really? Agreed some of the responses in here were funny, maybe comical, but ever? You clearly have never been to Bare Assets.
I'm not sure why you're beating this topic to death. Did someone tell you your rims are sunken or something?

The tires arent stretched to clear the fender, theyre stretched so that the tread remains under the fender. They dont care about rubbing, hence the phrase rubbin is dubbin. Stretching harkens back to europe where most countries have laws saying your tire tread must be within the fenders. So when the old school VW guys started putting porsche wheels on their cars, they had to stretch the tires to comply with those laws.
And
at the OP saying this sidewalls arent performance oriented, thinner sidewalls = less sidewall flex and much better turn in response. Ever seen a race car with 35" tires on a 15" rim?
