A total of 9,951 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes at traffic signals in 1999 and 2000 – 20% of these vehicles failed to obey the signal and 13% failed to yield the right-of-way. On the other hand, 13,627 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes at stop signs - 21% failed to obey the sign and 23% failed to yield the right-of-way.
Crash and Casualty Statistics for the USA

Comes to about 1000 red light running fatalities a year. Previously I found stats that supported the fact that running red lights was the second leading cause of traffic fatalities. Can't find those stats now, regardless running red lights and stop signs are a problem and deserve a great deal more attention than street racing.

That said I still don't support government cameras looking in on our every move. I'd rather hide a few cops at the intersection and raise the fine to $500.

I thought there were sensors under the white line to let the light know there is a car there. I usually go over it to make sure that the light changes for me rather then sitting there for 5 minutes.

You don't have to use a gun, you rednecks, just use some spraypaint on the lens.

So is 1,000 out of 45,000 deaths, a significant number?
1/45 is about 2 per cent.

If the number one cause of crashes and death in Florida is careless driving, I wish to point out that it requires manpower and judgement
to detect a careless driver.
-------------------------------------
I wish to point out that a radar gun can just be pointed down the road and detect a speeder, so it's easier to do than detect a careless driver.

I wish to point out that a camera taking pictures at an intersection
can detect a red light runner, so it's easier to do than detect a careless driver.

Am I the only person who can see devices creating a mass production of revenue with less labor costs involved?.....and also the production of revenue without a significant effect on traffic deaths?-Bob

Default Helmet Law History/Fed Govt Fundraiser

In the 60's motorcyclists were not required to wear a helmet......UNTIL
the Federal Govt gave money to the states to enforce the wearing of helmets.....or witheld highway money from the states that did not create and enforce a helmet law.

In the 80's, the Fed Govt stopped paying money for helmet enforcement.
Insurance company lobbys, not to miss a good thing, got the law changed in Florida to where purchasing a certain type insurance (expanding their customer base) would exempt you from wearing a helmet.

That's when the law changed. Was it a fundraiser from the Federal Govt
or was there a safety reason that existed on one day, but did not exist one day later?

Periodically the Fed Govt gives states a fundraiser, and if taken to court on this, I could supply the evidence.-Bob

Me and a few friends where pissed about this ourselves we figure the goverment will get the idea when the find these cameras smashed and burnt along the road, what there doing is blatently illegal by Florida law and the fact that they passed it anyway against the will of the people is uncostitutional. I demand justic

Did you know, more people get struck by lightning than red light fatalities each year if that's an accurate number.

First off, let me say that I agree with you 100% about the cameras. I am completely against them.

That said, I do believe 2% is a number worth examining. You wouldn't get on a plane if 2% of them crashed killing everyone on board. In news today a crib manufacturer recalled 2.1 million cribs because four babies suffocated in them. 2.1M:4 I'm not gonna bother with the math on that but the percentage is a lot less significant that 2%.

We have all seen red light runners and they have pissed every one of us off, even though we may have used similar poor judgement ourselves. But the cameras are a horrible idea. I would much rather see fines of $500 and cops on the corners.
