Yes there are a lot of automatics on the road, but I dont think anyone steals a car just because it is automatic... Infact I highly doubt it.
I dont think thieves are lazy... They have been taking their time to research the cars they are jacking, profiling them, and then taking them without anyone noticing so far... Seems like they have put a lot of work into this.
Profiling by age, and saying that someone in their early 20's doesnt know how to drive stick is also a really really retarded comment. But its your theory, so whatever. I cant make a blanket statement but I know me and my friends all started off driving manuals when we were teenagers, and it really isnt difficult to learn... deffinetly not hard enough to deter someone away from stealing a manual car.
-Also, i dont have a lot of experience with Automatics, but dont they lock in park unless a key is inserted in the ignition? That would make it pretty difficult IMO... Much more difficult than just push starting the manual car.
