Default Rattle can paint jobs

Has anyone rattle canned their car before?
I'm not talking about some cheap flat black quick job. I mean actually tried to make it turn out right.
How did you like the results?

any tips, tricks, pointers, advice, and/or cheat codes?

I might have done it once or twice. When I have more energy, I'll type out some tips.

I used to spray the crap out of everything. These are some tips I learned over the years. A spray can paint job on a wide surface like a car is not going to look like a real paint job no mater what you do. But here is a couple of tricks to get the most out of your rattle can;

1. Paint on a cool, prepped, and dry surface.
2. Don't paint on a humid day or in direct sunlight.
3. Always prep your surface, make sure its clean, light sand it to create a good rough contact for paint to stick and then wash with mild dishsoap and water. Dishsoap breaks down oils that are bad for paint sticking.
4. Place your spray can in super hot, but not boiling water; this melts paint particles and excites the paint can's propellent so that spray comes out strong and even.
5a. Spray light even powder coats first. Mask off stuff with blue painters tape. The powder coat will ensure that the seam between tape and metal is sealed. If you spray wet right away it will seep under your tape.
5b. Try using a primer first so that your color is even. Experiment with grey, black or red primer to see what looks best as a base coat.
6. After powder coating, spray heavier coats holding spray can closer and overlap spray patterns while spraying back and forth in the direction of body panels. Eventually you'll apply a heavy wet coat last, but let previous coats dry so you don't get runny dripping paint.
7. routinely clean out spray nozzle as paint will accumulate in the hole and cause it to spatter.
8. Shake can often.
9. Let your car dry near a big fan to keep debris, dust, and bugs from settling in your wet paint.
10. When paint isn't tacky anymore, let the sun bake it. this will help to harden the paint.

Let the paint cure for several days. It might feel dry, but trust me, the undercoats are still soft.

if you want to get really good, after several days you could try to wet sand the paint with a fine emory cloth and water, then apply a rattle can clear coat.

Good luck.
