1. Paint on a cool, prepped, and dry surface.
2. Don't paint on a humid day or in direct sunlight.
3. Always prep your surface, make sure its clean, light sand it to create a good rough contact for paint to stick and then wash with mild dishsoap and water. Dishsoap breaks down oils that are bad for paint sticking.
4. Place your spray can in super hot, but not boiling water; this melts paint particles and excites the paint can's propellent so that spray comes out strong and even.
5a. Spray light even powder coats first. Mask off stuff with blue painters tape. The powder coat will ensure that the seam between tape and metal is sealed. If you spray wet right away it will seep under your tape.
5b. Try using a primer first so that your color is even. Experiment with grey, black or red primer to see what looks best as a base coat.
6. After powder coating, spray heavier coats holding spray can closer and overlap spray patterns while spraying back and forth in the direction of body panels. Eventually you'll apply a heavy wet coat last, but let previous coats dry so you don't get runny dripping paint.
7. routinely clean out spray nozzle as paint will accumulate in the hole and cause it to spatter.
8. Shake can often.
9. Let your car dry near a big fan to keep debris, dust, and bugs from settling in your wet paint.
10. When paint isn't tacky anymore, let the sun bake it. this will help to harden the paint.

Let the paint cure for several days. It might feel dry, but trust me, the undercoats are still soft.

if you want to get really good, after several days you could try to wet sand the paint with a fine emory cloth and water, then apply a rattle can clear coat.

Good luck.
thanks
thats what I was lookin for.
We figured most of that out when we put the primer down. I wanna go back over it with another coat to make sure we got everything. When you look at it really close you can see that some area got more primer than others. I was actually impressed with the spray pattern of the cans. It wasn't a quality spray gun pattern, but it was a lot better than I thought.
I'll have to keep that hot water trick in mind.
thanks

50 cans?!?
It took maybe 6 to get a decent coat of primer down...
although, a second coat, and a few coats of color and a coat or two of clear.... yeah, it might add up to 50...

scroll down to 69chargeryeehaa's post. you might try that, i saw a ranchero that was painted like that, it didnt look bad at all.

also google "$50 paint job"
I wish we only had to spend 50 bucks...
so far, between bodywork, bondo, sandpaper, tape, paper, misc prep, we've spent 350 bucks. and that only brought us up to the first coat of primer...
Yeah I know, at that pointyou could have just paid someone else to do it... but words can't describe the amount of body work damage there was. We had it estimated at over 3,500 bucks to get the major stuff done. That wasn't including all of the little spots you find once you start sanding...
Tomorrow we're gonna talk to a body/paint shop to get a little bit better estimate, including the paint job, just to get an idea of the difference in cost...

BTW - pics?
I think mazdachic took a few pics of it at the meet last night... I'll have to see if I can get them from her...

we were dumb and didn't take any pics before we started.
This whole thing started off as just wanting to repair the rust damage on the sunroof and the damaged clear coat on the rest of the roof.
we should know better than that.... lol...

don't know how much, if any difference there is, but we're using the auotmotive paint from the parts store. We're already talked to the manager at the advance right around the corner to let him know we'll be in to buy a shit load of cans... lol

so in a nutshell, take your time while doing it. baby step the paint on. pay attention to the details. be as clean as possible, and it should come out pretty good.

If the car comes out anywhere near as bad ass as our little gas door sample did, I'll be very happy. The bitch was so nice, my girlfriend could do her make up with it.

the rollers and rustoleoum looks pretty damn good, and is a hell of a lot less spraying and breathing in of those fumes. search on google and youll find some cars that look super clean and shiny.
