Got mine for less than 1/3 of that and the only thing I've had to replace is a starter bolt, a headlight, and a taillight bulb, for a combined repair cost of about $10-12. Had it for about a year and a half. It's slow as balls, and frankly, I wish more people on the road had to drive as slow as I do.

Get a suzuki swift/Geo Metro. They are lovely on gas and very very very cheap to repair/maintain. Also you can get 1996+ for under 1k easily. If you don't care about looking "stylish" and modding and other shit like that and just want a reliable car that will cost you near nothing in gas/repairs and at the same time get you from point A to B reliably then this or as stated before an older corolla will be your best bet.

Edit:
a toyota tercel would be decent and are fairly cheap as well.....

I'm sure he saved up enough for that 90's corolla by now. I'm also sure he is no longer in HS.

Get a four door Honda with auto trans from a little old lady.

They last longer, maybe 300K miles, get cheaper insurance rates, and look innocent to the cops. Leave it bone stock. These things will let you save money to get something you like later on.

Don't spend money to make it go faster..........keep it clean, make it look
good and comfortable inside with accent lighting.......so you can get some pussy....... -Bob
