Garmin ftw. My boss and I have them and its a better unit than the tomtom IMO.
A friend has returned 2 tomtom's and couldn't get it to connect in NJ after a long plane ride.

I've heard nothing but horrible things from TomTom. As for the Alpine one, the GPS guy told me it sucks, sure it's an all in one GPS, MP3, portable, etc... but the GPS part is horrible, and it's their first attempt at it.
I usually go with Garmin since they have established their name, but some of the Garmin models suck too. For something good but basic, you'd be spending about $400 + extras. I would pick out of the newest models since they are the most updated. To update your machine, you are going to have to pay a fee in the future, like $50.

Garmin ftw. We rented one with a rental car in California, and HAD TO buy one when we got back. The rental one was the $280 model Street Finder..not sure the number, but definitely the cheapest model. We got a Nuvi. It's pretty much the same, but slimmer design.

Oh, and you don't have to read ANYTHING to figure out the Garmin. Even my computer illiterate husband had no problem with it. It's extremely user friendly.

yeah the garmin is VERY easy to use, seriously 80 year old men would come into CC and figure them out in 10 mins.. pick for yourself, but i havent heard very much good about tom tom, they just have a big name due to all of the comercials that were playing. Garmin, exp the nuvi's (just starting coming out when i quit CC) are bad ass.

I bought the Co-Pilot Navigator GPS thing for my laptop, but I have my laptop with me where ever I go
